Openstreetmap passed its 100'000th km of nordic ski pistes !

Posted by yvecai on 17 November 2022 in French (Français). Last updated on 20 November 2022.

This happens on 15.11.2022, somebody mapped the 100’000th kilometer of nordic ski piste. screenshot.

These are the trails tagged piste:type=nordic. They describe several practices : backcountry touring, classic style on prepared rails or skating on large groomed pistes. In OSM, they are distinguished thanks to the key piste:grooming=backcountry/scooter/classic/skating or classic+skating.

That’s pretty cool!

Thank for the news 😇👍🎉🎉🎉 How did you do to “raise an alarm” when this goal was achieved? Did you make a query via overpass (I don’t think so)? Or did you sum up all the length by scanning the OSM planet files? Or query a database?

Also what are the next “goals” you are waiting for? How did you come up with this great idea of looking for ski track length? 👍👍👍👌

Yep, just updated my signature on the diary to make things clear.

The stats at Opensnowmap.org are updated daily counting ways length in the rendering database. This counts both ways and relation with piste:type=nordic, but removing duplicates (meaning a way part of a relation is not counted twice). It’s here: code.

I noticed a while ago that we were approaching a big round value, so I recently checked every day to make a diary entry of it ;-)

Great this round number even deserve a short entry in the next WeeklyOSM news. Can you please consider submitting a link to your journal on https://weeklyosm.eu/ ? Have a nice day 👍
