The OSMF License Charade

The OSM Foundation Board wrote separately to laznik on a version of this proposal.

In summary, the board takes attribution seriously as a duty and completely supports reminding attribution offenders. To do that, the Board has a process and template for mappers to voluntarily issue polite, professional reminders.

You’ll find it here. Please use it whenever you see unattributed maps.

Laznik correctly identifies that it is an inefficient model. Yes, it is. It could be improved. But it inefficiently hit 90% attribution.

Laznik’s proposal for an open profit driven process to pick up the remaining 10% introduces efficiency (and financial costs) but also a risk of some few profit-minded mappers going beyond reminding into an attitude of harassing OSM data users, leading to expensive reputational damage. Incentives can sometimes act perversely.

We should not lose sight of the big goal, which is free data for all, and we support all OSM data providers and also all OSM data users, even the 10% who are attribution offenders. The board therefore chooses courteously reminding and supporting data users and is concerned at any possibility of harassment.

Laznik is completely correct that we should all work to get the attribution % even higher in recognition of the work of all OSM mappers. Proposals are always welcome. We thank laznik for a full commitment to OSM and for putting great effort into the proposal on how to improve on the current inefficient process.

community in the map and at the table: my first year and continuing plans as OSMF board member

Arnalie is right that being on the Board is hard at first. It takes a while to learn how the OSMF Board works behind the curtains - but look at her now using that learning to make a huge push on community growth and all the encouragement and empowerment of our contributors - especially in Africa and Asia! go! go! go! /ca

Map and language text identification error

Re: assanges 29 Jan 2021 I’m following an OSMF policy that we choose to be nice to newbies without any exceptions. If you read the minutes, even the most evil vandals are blocked and removed in astonishingly polite, patient, civil language. The reason we behave like adults, exercise self-discipline and sit on our anger is that we are trying to build an inclusive organisation and it is very clear that displays of arrogance, aggression and flame-wars just drive the less-aggro people away.
There is some talk of creating an OMSF moderating committee to police unfriendly posting, but even when that is implemented the lists or comment sequences will be expected to self-regulate. This discussion is just that - a comment sequence self-regulating. Thank you for participating.

Map and language text identification error

With reference to Supaplex 21 Jan 2021 at 05:00. It is openstreetmap policy that discussions should be helpful and positive. I noticed that the comment referred to was perhaps angry and raised a threat. That is unfortunate and does not follow the guidelines. It would be better if the comment helpfully assisted the diary owner to understand that OSM has just one policy for mapping of all the very many disputed territories across the world.

Building community - OSM India

This is very useful Naveen. Membership is very important - I am interested in finding a bunch of good examples for building OSM membership and teaching mapping skills - your workflow of developing community links with Telegram is great. Can I remind you of the OSMF micro-grants programme which is a competitive process which can potentially-possibly-maybe support expanding, documenting and formalising pilot programmes like this.
