Artwork : only for tourists

Posted by Pieren on 18 October 2013 in English.

If you search ‘artwork’ in OSM, you find the tag “tourism=artwork”. Which means that art is reserved for tourists in OSM ! Funny

Good point. Much left to do in making sense of what was arbitrary tagging that has since become the standard to use if you want default Mapnik to render it.

It was also quite funny when we got the proposal for tourism=gallery through for art galleries. Some people thought there was no need because we already had art shops and museums.

Somebody did suggest a great big revision of tags under a “culture” key, but it got nowhere because, like all great big revisions, it would only lead to an even bigger mess of old and new tagging systems.

Ah well, tags…

Even restaurants confuse me. A lunchroom can be high quality food which would place it out of the fast food taging. but a restaurant it is not. And how about cafe (with just coffee and pie) and cafe (coffee and beer) and bar and pub?

Why not tourism=restaurant anyway? Sensible people should eat at home if that is nearby ;)

tourism=hotel is the one which bugs me. I spend around 10 years when most weekdays I was living in a hotel, but I sure as hell wasn’t a tourist.
