OpenStreetMap

Newbie

Posted by Memoire on 11 July 2014 in English.

So, I’m a newbie, but I’ve caught on quick. I really like this project and hope to contribute more in the future. I’ve made my focus the Black Hills; this is where I’m located, and the coverage of the area is mediocre. I was especially disappointed by the state of the mapping of Deadwood, one of the most legendary towns in the American West… so I fixed ‘er up! Or, at least, as well as little new me can.

I’m calling for help to outline parts of the US, especially the Midwest, that are often overlooked.

If you’re also from the Black Hills, or, well, just want to chat, feel free to contact me here on OSM.

Welcome to society! Could you share a link to your area (where you are planned to draw a map) to have possibility to see your progress, please.

Memoire mentioned Deadwood, South Dakota.

Thank you for the welcome! And yes, I’m referring to Deadwood and any other town in this rural area; due to the oil boom in North Dakota that has more recently spilled into South Dakota, as well as increased tourist traffic (one of the area’s largest industries), small towns and big cities alike in this region are beginning to boom. There are already whole sections of Rapid City that didn’t exist 5 years ago.

In addition, Sturgis, which holds the world’s largest motorcycle rally, is very poor in coverage despite being a major tourist attraction. I see almost no labelled businesses or destinations in or around the city.

I’ve already made good progress on Belle Fourche and Spearfish; many places in Spearfish were already labelled, but Belle Fourche had hardly any around Main Street or US 85, the most commercial parts of the city (it’s legally a city though it’s tiny).

Heard about OpenStreetMap on NPR radio last week - sounded great, here I am! Already added two items just for practice. I like this.

I found it through the Wikipedia page “List of crowdsourcing projects”. I’ve become a bit obsessed with this project already, haha! Also, welcome to you too- nice to meet a fellow newbie!
