Germany - Rheinland-Pfalz - Dahn und Hauenstein

Posted by JND on 4 April 2010 in English. Last updated on 6 May 2010.

Last weekend we have been to the "Dahner Felsenland" an area full of red sandstone with lots of nice cimbing possibilities and also lots of nice walks. We did only two tours. One around Dahn the "Dahner Felsenpfad" and half of the "Hauensteiner Schusterpfad" due to rain and time restrictions.

The mapping of the area rose questions:
1) How to map solitary stone formations (as peaks, as attractions?)
2) How to map very demanding ways with about 20 cm width and steep ascents?
3) How to map arrow targets and aiming areas distributed in the woods?

There are lots of paths still missing on the map and not all of the stone formations are named. So in addition to beautiful landscape there is some white space for the OSM mapper...

Germany - Schleswig-Holstein - Sylt

Posted by JND on 4 April 2010 in English.

Again a week on the island of Sylt and lots of tracks uploaded as GPX and edited into the map. Now Kampen is really existing - a village that has been neglected for some reason. But there is still much to do and even complete roads are missing.

So if You travel there, don't forget Your GPS device.

On the other hand - don't do that! So there are more chances for me to spend a good holiday and leave some traces on the map ;-)

Netherlands - Around Wissenkerke

Posted by JND on 6 January 2010 in English.

Hi,

I have been to the Netherlands and mapped some runs and walks. I was impressed by the import of the AND/3dshapes there and hope that I have not interfered with automatic repairs. The GPX tracks are uploaded, so that other might check and
correct.

Some of the data seems to be for rendering only - most rivers are split, when they flow under a bridge. In some areas the streets run through the houses, but it was not possible to detect whether the importet house shapes are correct or the streets...

Danemark - along the coast of Jytland

Posted by JND on 21 October 2009 in English.

This years main holiday took me along the coast of Danemark, from Ribe to Nymindegap, Thyborøn, Løkken, Hanstholm, Grenen, Skagen, Sæby, Udbyhøj, Hobro, Jelling, Kolding, Sandersvik and back to Germany...
Lots of streets were already mapped and there must have been an import of housenumbers. This releaved from the struggle to remember the street names, as there where always houses around, that had the rights tags.
I think there is still a lot to do, most smaller streets are missing and the mapping of the footpathes has not really started, at least in the areas where I have been. Also the coastline needs a lot of work, it looks like it was regained from a very croase bitmap.

So if You are for a mapping holiday, go for Danemark ;-)

The referenced map shows the "refined" harbour of Sæby, the campsite and a freshly added castle.

I've been to Scotland for a week and stayed in the Benmore Centre and used some of my spare time to fill in patches of that beautiful but nearly untouched (at least bei OSM) area.

Most names are from pictures, but there might be some errors and there is still a lot to do...

Germany - Nordrhein-Westfalen - Hückeswagen - Bever- und Neyetalsperre

Posted by JND on 25 May 2009 in English. Last updated on 4 August 2009.

Last (extended) weekend I was at a camp site close to the Bever reservoir and did some running and walking in that area. There are a lot a walking ways missing and the extend of the woods and waters are not really alaborated. I had to adjust some of my records in JOSM to fit them together with the existing stuff. I also had to omit many points of interest as I could not remember what a way point mark was meant to mean...my Garmin Forerunner only allows lap-mark, which I use as a mean to mark waypoints. But after 10km or more of running You do not remember everthing...was it a gate or kissing gate or just the junction with another way... so feel free to correct my errors.

...I've become a bit lazy updating the diary - too much to read on the mailing lists and two many new features to learn with JOSM.

The last major walking tour has been in Hofheim am Taunus following again one of the recommendations of the Kompass-Wanderführer. Some day I will include the respective relations...

It is really hard to decide, what kind of way it is. I use more and more tracks grade2-4 in the woods now but use path/sac_scale=hiking or mountain-hiking when the path is comparable to apline routes...

Germany - Schleswig-Holstein - Sylt

Posted by JND on 21 April 2009 in English.

I spend about 10 day on the island of Sylt and did a lot of running and walking, and of course mapping. There is still much to do and I'm wondering whether everybody forgets his GPS while on holiday...

I did a lot of validation with JOSM and I hope nobody minds the corrections. Furthermore I hope that others will correct the errors that I made...

Germany - Wiesbaden - Freudenberg

Posted by JND on 31 October 2008 in English.

Last weekend I made one of my vavorite walks in the vineyards close to Wiesbaden. Start at the small road opposite of the Dahlienweg and take the first turn left, down the hill. Take the second track left, through the vine and follow this track till it joins another track, continue on this one an follow the slow climbing, long right curve. After a left curve, turn right and head for the forest, turn right and follow the forest border until You reach the end of a small road. This is the same one, on which You started.

Retagged Railroad in Solingen

Posted by JND on 8 September 2008 in English.

Another weekend in Solingen and a change to track the rail connection from Solingen Hbf to Solingen Grünewald. I'm wondering who the train windows affect the GPS resolution. In ICE-trains there is nearly no chance of getting good
tracks, but regional trains are OK if You get a place near a window...

Added some streets too, but still lot of white areas...

I continue to map the smaller ways in Westfalenpark and Rombergpark. Last week I discovered the validation plugin for JOSM and started to fix thing which are along the road.
Two topics are still a bit unclear. 1: cycleways along roads which are also used by pedestrians 2: Huge ways in parks (sometimes more than 4 meters wide) but sometimes scattered with trees or flower areas. There is a similar problem with very wide steps...
