OSM, my new hobby. OSM

Posted by DK317 on 6 March 2012 in Chinese (China) (‪

While I was using outdoor navigation app on my smartphone, I discovered that there are not only Google maps or Bing Maps only, but a OPEN MAP called OSM. The location information accuracy is much better reflect on this map compares to Google and Bing. After I linked to OSM web, I realized this is a place that user can edit and update the OSM map real time and free. This is cool.

Using the map for a week of time now, updated many roads and area information for Xi'an City. This is a task and job consumes time and energy. But it is very fun. While you are driving on the road created by yourself, this feeling is very proud emotion.

How is the data quality in China?

Btw, I won't receive notifications, so if you want to mail me, you can use the OSM PM system, or just mail to sanderd17[AT]gmail[DOT]com.

Two words of warning:
first - mapping can be addictive and take up a signifikant part of your time :-)
second - apparently the government does not like it if people do mapping in China. See http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_China for more details (and of course for more information on OSM in China).
And, last but not least: Welcome in the mapping community! We are glad to have you here!

That's great! I'm planning to visit Xi'an next year, so it'd be fantastic to have the map of the city with me on my phone when I arrive :-)

Which type of smartphone do you have? If you have an android-based phone, I can recommend you OsmAnd, which works great even when not connected to internet.

Have fun!

To Pieleric, I am glad to know that you will visit Xi'an. And hopefully we might meet up for a quick beer. My Smartphone is Windows Phone 7.5, Made of Samsung. It is a pretty nice quick response device.
