OpenStreetMap

Being a relative newcomer to OSM, I was surprised to find little data on Melbourne’s tram stops. With the largest tram network in the world and over 1,760 stops on the network, it is a large project to complete.

With my local knowledge and some field trips, my aim is to input as much information as possible for each stop using tags. I have completed all of the route 48 stops as a sort of pilot, and many other routes will overlap.

I am particularly concentrating on the following attributes:

  • Accessibility
  • Shelter
  • Seating

Any other attributes will be added as needed. I will record each route as I complete it, in no particular order.

Hopefully I can cover all 1,763 stops soon!

In progress

  • Route 109

Completed

  • Route 48

You might like to take note of Mapillary. Open Data from VicRoads is being progressively loaded onto Mapillary: this may really help add details without committing to visit every tram stop.

I cant find an example with trams because many of these sequences have not yet been fully processed by Mapillary and dont yet show up as a blue line on the map.

Also https://www.data.vic.gov.au/data/dataset/ptv-timetable-and-geographic-information-2015-gtfs has recently been released as open data - to do an import is relatively straight forward; the biggest blocker would be getting written approval above and beyond CC 3.0 licencing.

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Data.vic.gov.au also touches on tram datasets

Thanks for that help guys :)

I guess my concern with using the VicRoads or PTV data is that many tram stops have shelter from adjacent buildings that are not necessarily dedicated to shelter for the stop, and is not included in the open data. Some of the seating that is not owned by a state government authority is also not included. The data would be useful for the accessibility aspect though.
