Adding Mobile Money Agents to OSM

Posted by nj3ma on 5 November 2013 in English.

Mobile money agents are a fact of life here in Kenya. Over half of all adults use a mobile money transfer service. Locating an agent is often a difficult task, especially when you are in unfamiliar places. It would be nice if it were possible to add a mobile money agency specific POI.

I don’t know those things (I live in the UK) - do I understand you right, that you’re talking about some kind of shop where you can transfer money that’s associated with your mobile phone? Are they usually separate places of their own, or are they combined with other things (e.g. grocery shop)?

I just had a look on the wiki and taginfo, and I couldn’t see anyone having used a tag for those. You could start marking them yourself, of course, if you decide on a suitable tag. It might be appropriate to use a tag like shop=mobile_money, maybe, or to add an extra feature to other shop POIs like mobile_money=yes? Anyway, just thinking out loud, because I’ve not seen these things in real life, and I’m surprised that I don’t seem to see it being used in OSM yet.

Agree, just decide which tag they should be filed under and then start to tag them. Easy enough to do tiles or POI search for them then.

But please at least document the tag on the wiki, if you do not want to go through the formal procedure of proposal and voting. You could also discuss this on the tagging mailing list, this is the preferred place to talk about new tagging keys.

@mcld: I read of the developing GSM based money transfer system in 2010. I googled around a little and found an article in English from 2012 which explains the system a little: http://www.cgap.org/blog/senegal-unique-ecosystem-branchless-banking-west-africa

amenity=money_transfer looks a good tag to me to map this.
