Clarification on the status of the A272

Posted by daveemtb on 7 September 2009 in English (English)

Having travelled part of the A272 recently and found the signs to be a confusing mix of green-signed and white-backed signs, I emailed West Sussex County Council's highways department. They have clarified that the entire A272 currently has primary route status, although there have been changes in the past and there may be changes in future.

However, it isn't clear whether this applied to the sections of the A272 outside of West Sussex. I suspect either end of the road may be non-primary.

I must remember to tag the West Sussex section accordingly. People keep swapping it around as they see various signs in either background colour. Any suggestions on a good tag to indicate authoritative source? I'm currently thinking source:ref=WSCC highways dept, perhaps followed by a link to this diary post.

Location: Shipley, Horsham, West Sussex, South East, England, United Kingdom

It's the highway class rather than the ref that you sourced from WSCC highways department, so I think a slight variation to the source tag is in order. I think that referencing this diary post is a good way to elaborate on why the tagging is as it is.

Thanks, yes, I meant highway type, not ref. Will try to do it now...

How long till someone see a white sign and changes it back? :-s

I'm probably one of the people you're talking about; setting it back to primary, working on the basis that the A272 had white signs, but I'd always considered it to be around trunk status in importance/traffic. I had meant to check with WSCC myself, so thanks for this.

Does this mean it's now definitively "trunk"? (or, at least the bit in West Sussex).

I didn't mean that as a complaint at people for changing things based on signs they see, more that the signs are inconsistent. I'd quite likely have done the same myself. Yes, it's definately "highway=trunk" status in OSM terms within West Sussex. I received further clarification that the end sections, outside of West Sussex, do have sections with "non-primary route" status in Surrey (between the A3 and A31), and also also in East Sussex, which confusingly means that in OSM terms those sections should be "highway=primary". Perhaps someone could contact ESCC to find out what the situation is there?

Cool. Should it change I'll quite happily clobber it back to trunk inside Sussex - makes more sense based on my knowledge of the road anyway. Good idea about the note= btw :-)
