A new mapping start in New Zealand

of course LINZ won't import everything, either, so there's plenty of chance to micromap the parts other maps/data don't reach :)

A new mapping start in New Zealand

I think the LINZ import is pretty stalled for some reason. My dodgy memory tells me there was either a technical problem or a licensing holdup.

Protesters Falls Ride

It's an amazing place and road there. I must get back there with a tent one day soon. I guess now it's mapped that's slightly less appealing, though your photos entice me more.

Boondall Survey

I wondered if you hit "send" ahead of time. Waiting for the punchline. Yes, I feel misled and want my money back ;~)

Brisbane/Springfield: Centenary Highway extension (Springfield to Yamanto)

Phew! I only didn't do this this weekend because, well, I didn't get to it. Would have been a duplicated effort.

One weirdity when I checked this road before potentially surveying it was that it had been last edited the day before its grand opening on Sunday 28th June. Do you understand that?

Country roads around Lismore

Yeah, it's a nice part of the world. Must be somewhat challenging on a bike. You'll enjoy Nightcap National Park when you get there. Ah, memories from so long ago …

Showing my girlfriend how to use OpenStreetMap

+1 Ævar. I want the power of JOSM, but every time I open it, I am filled with resentment that I *need* to figure so much out. I know I could sit down and study it, but should I really have to? My conscience tells my brain not to play along.

Aus, QLD - Dalby 99.99% at last

Ah, good to see some rural activity a-happening. My sense is that Australia has a lot of mapping outside the big cities left to do. We've thought about a posse from Brisbane attacking somewhere like Warwick or Toowoomba, but unfortunately Dalby and further are not really practical day trips from the capitals. Thus, your efforts are really valued.

Transitory rant

I suspect the ticketing system has GPS because (a) I think I actually heard it; and (b) it somehow has to know which zone the bus is currently in, though it's possible they may be making the drivers hit a counter. In case anyone's bothered by me speaking out of my arse, I won't have to if my elected council will be more transparent about how its tax-funded systems really work. Without that, it's totally my prerogative to postulate.

Stopwatch, of course! Much easier. There's me rushing to the higher end gadget solution, when the best tool is on my wrist all the time. Thanks.

Hi and welcome, too. We seem to be nearby.

It's great to get this in the map. I'd like to hear more about how you're going about it, too.

Another benefit of ground surveying (with or without GPS) is seeing that the cycle paths are really what they say they are. I don't think we should give credit for a yellow bicycle painted on a road, especially when it's on a "lane" used for car parking. Governments like us to think this counts towards their ("green", of course) bike path tally. No sane cyclist should feel safe with this arrangement.

Good luck!

New User Beginnings in Brisbane, Australia

Welcome! I'm glad someone's filling some of the nonames in West End I've noticed but never got to checking out. It's good you're being a little cautious - you'll certainly make mistakes, but soon learn from them and be more confident in no time. You'll also come to understand which types of mistakes or incompletenesses are less important.

Another no-brainer feature good for newbies is post boxes. It's all fun. Enjoy.

Brisbane

Hi - good to have you back in the fold. :~) There's quite a few other regular contributors too, now, so there must be a dozen or so around Brisbane now.

I traced a few paths in that nature reserve around Seventeen Mile Rocks / Sinnamon Park a couple of months back (Edenbrooke, it seems to be called). Sometimes I forget to do anything with my traces. If you are planning to cover this, let me know first and I'll map what I've done there. Will serve as a better foundation. I should do it anyway.

Tristan da Cunha satellite mapping

Thank you. I love reading about forgotten places like this and imagining life there. I hope an Ed7er takes up your offer.

End of the Line

If the bus stop points are accurate (or close enough), just put highway=bus_stop for the time being. That would be a great help. Someone can come along later and add metadata, but having that point will make their task easier (they won't even need the GPS) :~)

Everyone has their own scheme, BTW, for public transport metadata, so look around the wiki and cherrypick the tag keys you like. :~)

Zooooooom.

You can probably also use your accessibility features – Orca screen magnifier and the like. I suspect Compiz is more fun, though.

In any case, don't you just see a bunch of big pixels when you zoom?

Hope your pair-mapping expedition went well. Waiting for the diary entry. :~)

Bought my first GPS

Nice cable! That expensive little requirement was the sting in the tail of my purchase. I'd like to see a direct USB connector if that's possible.

Late comment – you've probably been using this a lot by now. I just wanted to advise you that it will take some time before you work out the most effective way(s) to use the eTrex H. Expect to make methodological mistakes. Keep tweaking your process as you learn more about your device. You probably won't make mistakes in your mapping so much, you just might miss stuff or do things inefficiently. This can all be fixed, even if not by you.

Good luck!

You shall map the longest street in the village with … a herring!

@BlueMM: I was certainly vacillating there, but I think you're right and I've now changed it. Thanks.

oops - "@Circeus"

You shall map the longest street in the village with … a herring!

Thanks both. :~)

@chippy: I know about Osmarender and I've found at least one instance of where I've pointed to it in the past. The problem is it's still not as nice a rendering as Mapnik, and anyone reading a diary entry _after_ the next slippy map update would presumably prefer Mapnik. I have intentions to dive into Osmarender and help make it nicer, as I think SVG has a lot of advantages "going forward", as they say. I'm still trying to figure out why it's been written as a push stylesheet. ~:~| (more importantly, whether I can work with that or change it)

@Circus: I'll apply that tag and investigate whether the wiki mentions it. It should certainly be easier to find. Pretty sure I looked at the page on the "access" key.
