5 days ago | After ahving de-frustrated and slept on it, I try I take a go. Do however be aware that all civil servants up there are under severe stress, but really want their culture to appear correctly in any availlable place. So correct mapping with items and names (in particularly not primary names in American English) is not a minor issue. Give me a couple of days to read up and ask for a formal permission to use what they did for me, please.......
6 days ago | "Of course" I have the permisssion. Already in september 2025 I asked if they would be interested in having their geographical data on the map with correct names. The response was enthusiastic:"Wauw, thanks!". Outside users can only look up items one-by-onein pop-ups here: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=c5c7d9d52a264980a24911d7d33914b5 So they would have to set up a script for spreadsheet extract. Work and iterations was made between them and their IT-provider in Copenhagen. I reviewed. Third or fourth time aound the result was honky-dory, and I received the full set. Beyond my expectations: 30539 items. From then on I filtered out, categorized and post-processed to make tables that would fit OSM. End December this was ready. Since then it has been up to other mappers to review and finish each. Currently some 16000 have been done: All islands/islets, all lakes, all rivers, many peaks, and some other.. If you want things to be done in another way, you are welcome to find some who will take over. Note: Mapping is not like in most places. It is all one arctic wilderness, so for the most parts there is really nothing to relate to. Each item must be identified almost spot-on and then reviewed/revised. I give up.
7 days ago | No probelm. The latest import was on 1st january. No more planned...
| 176706570 | 7 days ago | Further on since saturday. FYI: Some 28000 geographical names were added after comparison with what was already in OSM. They all appeared as either completely missing or misspelled. TBy import the hit rate turned out to be not 100%, but more like 90. Since 1st January post editing in OSM has been going on.
I can also see results from others that add and complement lakes and rivers with even adding streams in the sides. There are some 4000 such as well. The map is becoming much more detailed. I have been and is still fixing peaks. All with a name_da and all close to towns are done. Still some 3000, all in the wilderness, to go. Then there are glaiciers, fjords etc.. Data preparation with getting a good extract and translating souce typology into OSM has ben going on since late november. Unfortunately I identified and imported some items as supposed coastlines-to-be. Got fast reactions, so all change sets were reverted and new and bettor ones established instead. Unfortunately also I am not good at josm, so pinpointing and correcting methodical errors with "too much in" is beyond my ability. I would love to be able to easily delete field "source:name" from all that have "source=Nunat Aqqi" or Nunat Aqqi in the source text.... |
8 days ago | You will not get a full and comprehensive answer today. I am sick. Tomorrow hopefully better...
11 days ago | Overpass Turbo found all 6. Fixed within 2 minutes.
13 days ago | Outline had islet, name point had island. Join made islet;island. Simply forgot to remove the ;
20 days ago | If you want it that way, then change it. It is one of 28000 updates/imports from the database extract I recently received from them. I have not verified the contents of each item. I know, however, there are thousands of name_da in it.
21 days ago | Btw the aim of the chgset was to add official old spellings and simply establish names for a lot of others. So the one here was Nûk I doubt if "Godthåb" was even touched.
21 days ago | Official names are in Nunat Aqqi. Specific place here https://www.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=c5c7d9d52a264980a24911d7d33914b5
21 days ago | My change/addition for this and thousands more is the official set of names from the Greenland name authority database. I have no opinion about if someting else sould be better in specific cases. Btw old_name:da should rightfully be Godthaab to stick to the same setup as for the inuit name/old_name...
30 days ago | I am fully aware of that. Unfortunately the official name database only have the points. Please DO NOT just delete them. There are other features in the received dataset that should over time also be extended to areas or lines. In particular islands, lakes, and rivers that I am working my way through. Then comes glaciers, land areas, peninsulas and more. As to the coast, if you have a better proposal for good point tagging of these, please inform me. Then you may remove thhem as long as you do not just destroy the original change sets. I can pull the coasts etc. from the original and re-istate in a way that suits all...
about 1 month ago | To import all missing officially known geographical names in Greenland, so that features can get a correct name immediately after they are entered. The most important task is to create or assign name to lakes, islands, rivers, and mountain peaks. Compared to that most of the rest is is "luxury". There are in total some 28000, and my best estimate is 4000 of each of those four main types.
4 months ago | This coastline is utterly wrong: 200024690
4 months ago | My thanks. I merged in my free-flowing name point :-)
4 months ago | This changeset shoud be reverted or revised so as not to re-introduce/duplicate items already in the map.
4 months ago | This fjord was here 4 years ago. Should be made an outline, not a new line.
4 months ago | This was here more than 4 years ago H.G. Backlund Fjord (9014313906)
4 months ago | Oh, I shall keep editing, but mainly by importing/supplementing official coordinates and place names. Revceived from the authorities. Have some thousands in the pipeline. Can outline rivers and lakes, but no multi polygons.
