My Journey as an OM Guru Fellow: Empowering Communities Through Open Mapping

Introduction
In January 2024, I embarked on an exciting journey as part of the OM Guru Fellowship program under the Open Mapping Hub - Asia Pacific. As one of the 50 selected Guru Fellows, I had the opportunity to join the Training Track, focusing on conducting training sessions, webinars, and mapathons for community members. This fellowship aims to foster a sustainable OpenStreetMap (OSM) ecosystem in the Asia-Pacific region by building the capacity of new and experienced mappers alike.
Getting Started
The fellowship began with an orientation, where we learned about the scope of work, our expected roles, and the various activities we would undertake over the next five months. As a Training Track Fellow, I was excited to engage with diverse communities and contribute to the open mapping movement by sharing my knowledge and skills.
Training Sessions and Webinars
During the fellowship, I conducted two online webinars and one in-person training session. These sessions were designed to cater to both beginners and experienced mappers, covering a wide range of topics.
Online Webinars
Day 1 - OpenStreetMap (OSM, iD Editor, Tasking Manager):
1. How to add a feature to OpenStreetMap using iD Editor: We explored the intuitive interface of iD Editor and practiced adding new features to the map.
2. The role of the Tasking Manager in the control and coordination of mapping workflow: Participants learned how the Tasking Manager helps streamline collaborative mapping projects by dividing tasks into manageable chunks.
3. How to master the OpenStreetMap interface by creating an account and using its basic mapping: We walked through the process of creating an OSM account and familiarized ourselves with its basic functionalities.
Day 2 - GIS (Natural Earth Datasets, QGIS, Map Creation):
4. How to access and use Natural Earth Datasets: I introduced Natural Earth Datasets and demonstrated how to access and utilize these comprehensive geographic data sets for mapping projects.
5. The basics of the QGIS tool and its features: Participants were introduced to QGIS, a powerful open-source GIS tool, and explored its core features.
6. How to explore a data attribute table: We delved into data attribute tables, learning how to analyze and interpret data effectively.
7. Making your Map on QGIS: The session concluded with a hands-on exercise on map creation using QGIS, empowering participants to design their maps.
In-Person Training at PNG University of Technology
The in-person training session at PNG University of Technology in Lae, Morobe Province, was a memorable experience. Attended by staff and students from the School of Civil Engineering, the session focused on OpenStreetMap, iD Editor, and Tasking Manager. Participants engaged in hands-on activities, adding features to OSM using iD Editor, understanding the role of the Tasking Manager, and mastering the OSM interface. The face-to-face interaction allowed for dynamic discussions and immediate feedback, enhancing the learning experience.
Dynamics of Online Webinars vs. In-Person Training
The online webinars provided a unique platform for reaching a broader audience across different geographical locations. They allowed participants to join from the comfort of their own homes, making it convenient and accessible. However, the in-person training brought a different dynamic, with more interactive and engaging sessions. Being physically present enabled participants to ask questions spontaneously and receive immediate support, fostering a deeper understanding of the topics covered.
Personal Growth and Gratitude
I am incredibly thankful for being selected as an OM Guru Fellow. This fellowship has not only allowed me to share my knowledge with others but also helped me learn new skills and improve my current ones. I have grown significantly in public speaking, gaining confidence in delivering presentations and facilitating discussions. The experience has been transformative, enabling me to become a more effective communicator and leader.
Challenges and Opportunities
While the journey was rewarding, it was not without challenges. The vast geographical expanse and diverse cultural makeup of the Asia-Pacific region posed unique challenges, such as language barriers and varying levels of internet accessibility. However, these challenges also presented opportunities for growth and collaboration. By embracing these differences, we were able to create a more inclusive and vibrant mapping community.
Looking Ahead
As the fellowship draws to a close, I am grateful for the knowledge and experiences gained throughout this journey. The OM Guru Fellowship has empowered me to be a catalyst for change, inspiring others to contribute to OSM and build resilient communities through open mapping.
I look forward to continuing my work in the OSM community, supporting local initiatives, and fostering collaboration across the region. Together, we can achieve a sustainable and inclusive open mapping ecosystem that benefits everyone.
Conclusion
The OM Guru Fellowship program has been an incredible journey of learning, growth, and impact. I am proud to be part of a community that is dedicated to making a difference through open mapping. I invite others to join us on this journey and contribute to building a better world through OSM.
Thank you for reading about my experiences, and I look forward to sharing more insights and stories in the future!

Hi WanixRSGIS,
I hope you’re doing well! I’ve noticed that there have been at least 21 diary entries in the past three months with titles like “My OM Guru Journey” or something similar. They all seem to have a similar tone, title, and content, which got me curious—Is writing these diary posts a required part of the OM Guru program? Or is it something that’s suggested?
Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Thanks for the link. However, I’m just looking for some clarity on my original question about the diary entries. I’m curious to know whether writing these diary entries is a required or suggested part of the OM Guru program.
I’d prefer not to register for the program just to find out, so I’d really appreciate it if you could shed some light on this directly.
Thanks again, and looking forward to your response.

Hi @ivanbranco,
Thank you for your enquiry. Yes, writing diary entries like “My OM Guru Journey” is indeed a required assignment as part of the OM Guru Fellowship program (among others). These entries are meant to document our experiences, reflections, and learnings throughout the program. The idea is to foster a sense of community among participants and to provide insights that might be helpful to other mappers and the broader OpenStreetMap community.
If you have any other questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask!
Best regards,
