Understand the map

Posted by Stenklev on 27 January 2020 in English.

I am from Sweden. I just created an account but I don’t know Arabic, Russian, Hebrew or Greek. I can’t read the map. Is there no English? The map becomes meaningless.

Hello Stenklev,

the main OpenStreetMap-website defaults to the local language. Nevertheless other names can and are being tagged. You can get a detailed overview on Internationalization on the OSM-Wiki. Especially for your point, there is a link to https://maps.wikimedia.org/?lang=en, where you can select the language via the country code in the URL.

Hi friend. Yes, it true, there on openstreetmap.org key “name” is used to show all names. That is why all country are in their native language. If you will use another application (eg. OsmAnd for android) then you could see name:en according to you system language. Probably somebody could provide link to website with such feature.

Select the layer switcher (the “stack of books”) at the right-hand side of OpenStreetMap.org . The cycle map layer and transport map layers both show English names. Also look at openstreetmap.de.
