I think technically the road to Madeley Lake is not a forest service road anymore, since it was transferred to Whistler Olympic Park with their lease. I have no idea what it should be called though???

Are you going to update the trails to account for WOP / CC separation this coming winter?

Hi Rob,

I'm curious where you got the updated trail loop names from? The snowshoe map on the whistler olympic park website matches the old names: https://www.whistlerolympicpark.com/sites/default/files/2023-09/WEB-SkiCal-Snowshoe%20Map-2Dec2021_0.pdf

sac_scale=hiking- was a typo - thanks for catching it and checking in with me. I fixed in in changeset changeset/148601481

As for my comment about not having done all the trails - I mean this as an explanation for why I did not tag all the trails as I only tagged trails that I have hiked personally (at the time). There are still trails on burnaby mountain without a sac_scale tag

This changeset made the Gold Mountain trail discontinuous near the recycling centre. Was that on purpose. Last year this short segment (a steep descent to the road) was groomed.

Thank you I was able to set up the proxy in JOSM in all of 5 minutes, and now I have access to the much higher resolution data as an image overlay.

That's interesting. There's a strava heatmap layer set up as one of the default images in JOSM, but it isn't nearly as detailed as what you shared. Is a strava account required to access this data?

After running this "trail" I was all set to change to to highway=track when I found this discussion. I think highway=track is more appropriate. Locally there are many examples of roads with no public access used as hiking trails that are tagged with highway=track. (WOP XC trails, singing pass access road, Roe Creek R200 branch, elfin lakes trail, shannon creek road, HSCT north, above lions bay, etc)

Today I was adding missing access tags in golden ears park, and I noticed that you tagged the upper section of the alouette mountain fire access road as horse=no. What was the reason for this? The Golden Ears parks map from BC parks indicates horseback riding is permitted to the end of the road.

I think the uppermost portion of the route to sky pilot should also be upgraded to sac_scale=demanding_alpine_hiking due to the difficulty and exposure of the climbing involved. IMO the upper portion of the trail above the glacier qualifies as a "steep rock scramble" under the sac_scale definitions due to the difficulty and exposure at the pink slab.

Hi Rob, Welcome to OSM. I do a lot of work on ski trails in OSM in British Columbia where I live and do most of my skiing.

I've been looking into the Nordic skiing at Sun Peaks since I'm thinking about planning a trip there next year and I noticed that all the nordic backcountry trails have been tagged as piste:type=hike rather than piste:type=nordic + piste:grooming=backcountry. I'm not familiar with this area. Are these trails also used for snowshoeing? If so, then I think piste:type=nordic;hike would be the appropriate tagging.

It seems to me like a couple ways (900960509 and 900960508) ought to be named "Carl Wylie" rather than "Black Prince" to follow the Sovereign Lake trail map. However I don't know what the signs on the ground say for these trails.

This changeset added way/1040659049 which I think is actually a snowmobile trail according to the Sovereign Lake Nordic and Vernon Snowmobile association maps. I don't ski here regularly so I'm not confident about what's going on. Is this segment a special part of the sovereign2silverstar loppet only and not one of the regular Sovereign Lake XC trails? If so I wonder if there is a way to indicate this in the tagging?

Do you know if the trails are consistently groomed? Classic or Skate? And what the difficulty rating would be?

87575888

Hi I am attempting to add nordic skiing tags (piste:type=nordic, etc). So the Marsh Lake XC trails show up in ski oriented OSM apps. The trails you added here seem a little inconsistent with the published trail map and with the Stava heatmap data, so I'm not quite sure what to do. I will tag the consistent trails for now, but not change any of the existing data until I get some more information.

It looks to me like this changeset created a nearly duplicate way (ego bowl + jolly green giant) on the same ski piste. Normally this wouldn't be so bad, but in this case the two runs have different difficulty so it seems to render strangely. I think it was better before when Jolly Green Giant had 2 separate, disjoint segments.

I'm doing a check in on OSM mapping of WOP and Callaghan Country trails. I'm wondering why you changed this from piste:type=nordic + piste:grooming=backcountry to piste:type=skitour? I've never done this trail myself but it seems like it should be suitable for nordic backcountry ski gear.

I'm going to go ahead and make this change to merge these ways.
