My big SOTM adventure

Posted by NicRoets on 27 July 2009 in English.

High points :
* Cycling in the Netherlands and Belgium during the summer is awesome ! It's flat and cyclists often have right of way, so you almost never need to brake. And the views !
* Gosmore & Openstreetmap worked quite well.
* Meeting the other OSM addicts.
* Having so many friends who were willing to help.

Low points :
* Delayed luggage.
* Money stolen
* Finding so many youth hostels full. I guess all of the students are traveling because none of them can find vacation work.
* Puncturing 13km from the airport.
* Lufthansa wanting 130 euro to send my bicycle home. Hello ! To send a human works out at only 315 euro (which includes taxes), so how can they justify that ? Book it into first class or something ??

Camp in the wild. No nagging ppl, nice nature. :)
Other airlines fly your bike for ~25 EUR. Condor pe.

Nice journey I say, too.

Really cool. ;-) Just a minor question: How did you manage to get this great map with your track visualized? Would love to do the same but don't know which application to use...

First I joined all the GPX logs into one big file (many ways to do that, e.g. gpsbabel convert to csv and back). Then I uploaded it to gpsies.com and made a screen shot.

Thank you! :-)

SB79, you can make a overlay from any gpx-track. See http://malenki.ch/Touren/08/Sommer/map/Route.html for example :)
I had to simplify the tracks to 1 point/750 metres, otherwise the browser has too much to do.

@nic:
to merge tracks with gpsbabel you could do
gpsbabel -i gpx -f file1.gpx -f file2.gpx -f etc... -o gpx -F merged.gpx

@malenki
Yes, I do occasionally get away and in contact with nature. Like this trip from 2006 :

Nic Roets, I did not mean: go to $country and have a nap there, but just sleep at any place you like outdoors.
