During this time, I’ve met many talented people, participated in many projects that will benefit people for decades to come, and of course (how could I not?), I’ve also satisfied my ego with athletic achievements. Mapping is a great hobby for people like me who can never get enough of new data. Every day of mapping brings new knowledge, and with it, new emotions.

I’ve heard a lot of opinions this year. That mapping is about freedom. That mapping is about community. That mapping is about the environment in which a person lives. Perhaps all of this, and more, is completely true. But for me personally, mapping is about knowledge, data, and education. It’s like having a sweet tooth and finding a bottomless sea of ​​sugar. It’s like finding a beach where diamonds are scattered right under your feet.

About a week ago, vandals began defacing the map in South Korea. Over the course of that week, I rolled back hundreds of changes, and with the help of the site’s moderators, I banned over 50 malicious accounts.

In fact, the problem arose not even a week ago, but about a month ago. Back then, South Korean media reported that one account had allegedly leaked the locations of all the country’s military bases to the public on Openstreetmap. (link)

Even then, this false media claim struck me as disgusting, but it didn’t cause any major problems. Almost simultaneously, another Korean media report about Openstreetmap appeared: allegedly, an error in the domestic mapping services NaverMap and KakaoMap displaying a river in North Korea was linked to Openstreetmap’s activities: (link)

This is the story of how I mapped the islands off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. The story began on July 24th (two months ago). I thought long and hard about what mark I should leave on cartography, what was within my capabilities? And the task that seemed feasible to me was to map the islands of South Korea. TTheir number is limited, and the territory between them is much smaller than on the mainland. So, I realized it was a realistic task. All that remained was to find a way to start. I needed not the smallest, but not the largest island either, something that would be a great start. And so I selected the islands of the 영흥면: 영흥도, 선재도, 측도, 부도 and about a dozen more less significant ones.

I did all the work using an ID editor. My skills at the beginning were extremely mediocre, but I learned a lot along the way.

일주일 후에 선재도 매핑을 마쳤습니다. 재밌는 사실: 근처에 있는 5개의 작은 섬은 이전에 지도에 표시된 적이 없는데, 이는 OSM 지도에 존재하지 않는 섬이 한국에 수백 개나 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 즉, 아직 해야 할 일이 많다는 뜻입니다. 서쪽 해안에 있는 섬들을 지도에 표시할 계획입니다.

커뮤니티의 조언을 모두 참고했지만, 도로에 정확한 이름을 붙이는 방법을 여전히 찾지 못했습니다. 그래서 집 주소를 완벽하게 표시할 수 없었던 겁니다. 커뮤니티의 누군가가 제가 한 작업을 보고 도로와 주소를 알아낼 수 있다면 정말 좋을 텐데요.
