I was new to OSM and did not know there were more options for the data source. While I have GPS data for the area, I used the most recent Forest Service data which they used survey grade GPSs. I now give the website for the sources.

I have the problem with the tags figured out. In JOSM I selected all and deleted the tag. Took a few seconds. I saved the set to make sure it fixed the problem. But I will stop importing the data until I can figure out if it is OK. Like I said I really appreciate your help!

Like I said I am having a really hard time figuring this all out. Is this the required approval for the data: osm.wiki/Talk:National_Hydrography_Dataset The data I am using is the data they say the NHD is being replaced with. Thanks for helping me figure this out!

I am having a hard time understanding them. The data says "All the data is open and non-proprietary." The exact data is in the default editor under the "USGS National Map" So if it is there does not that mean it is OK to use? Instead of tracing it, I am importing the lines.

They are USGS data, the same data on the National Topo Map option on the standard editor. I thought we were supposed to select one of the drop down options. But I have started putting the site it is coming from: https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/6798da21d34ea8c18376e77f

I thought I had it all figured out and everything looks good on the rendered map and in OSMAnd. But last night I figured out something was weird. I was going to mess with it tonight and see if I can figure it out.

I downloaded all the hydrology for the country in a geodatabase and am using QGIS to export the streams in gpx. Do you know a way to use a GDB or shap file without converting to GPX? There are so many options on a GPX file and it is hard to tell which ones to use. I suspect it is a GPX setting, but could it be JOSM? Any suggestion on helping figure out what is causing it?

Thanks

I have it all figured out now and found a much faster and easier way to do it! I figured out how to export the streams as a GPX file from QGIS. Before GPX would never work in QGIS. But now it will import into JOSM without any extra tags.

thanks, I messed with JOSM last night and saw the tags and it was easy to delete them. I have created hundreds of ways the same way. I went back and looked at lots of them and did not see the tags on any of them. So not sure what is going on and will do some more testing. But for sure I will delete the tags in JOSM from now on.

I downloaded the latest hydrology for the country from the USGS site. I open it in QGIS and export an area I want to work on as kml files, then open in Garmin Basecamp, then export the streams I want to add as gpx files, then I add them in JOSM. I am not adding the tags. Is it an issue I should worry about? Should I delete the tags? Is there a way to avoid the tags being created? I have a really hard time figuring out JOSM. Thanks.

I wish you would have contacted them much sooner! They were very nice and had a very simple and much better solution: tag them as Trail riding stations. They show up much better on the map. I think I have most of them changed, but probably missed a couple. If you run across one, feel free to change it to trail riding station.

The whole area was a very inaccurate mess. I spent days fixing it based on my gps data and the sat photos. The ditches that were there were canals, so I used the same thing and extended some of them.

It is a water trail, I have not been able to find a way to identify it as a water trail, any suggestions?

have no ideal, I did not add them, I am just identify a name, that it is a trail and unpaved.

He was very insulting and he has not offered a single solution that would work, i.e., have them show on the map. I would be very happy to do anything that would simply show on the map. What good is putting something on the map that does not show on the map? If there is a better tag that will show on the map, I will be happy to use it.

I may have only been on OSM for 2 months, but I have added thousands of items. In 2 months I have added half as many as you have done in over 10 years. I told you I am open for a workable solution. But you have offered none. Your solution is to make you feel important by adding a tag no one in the area using the map can see. My solution is using a close tag that people using it in the area can see and easily know what it is. How many of these areas have you been too? I and many others spent countless hours documenting the damage the horses were doing and getting the Forest Service to create the highlines to protect the areas. I think protecting these areas is much more important than making you feel important. Unless you are the OSM police, I no longer care what you think.

Back to my question. Why is this a big deal that requires all this time? It is about 6 items that anyone can easily determine what it is. Is there some generic or misc tag?

I try to make sure I have that right. I have been adding lots of hydrology lately. I will add it in JOSM and then edit it in the regular editor. I go through and make sure it is flowing in the right direction and then get an error message that says it is flowing against another segment. But everything is correct. Doesn't happen much, but it drives me crazy when it does. Any suggestions?

I add them in JOSM, then go back and edit them in the regular editor to hopefully make sure all of that is taken care of. Did you find some that are currently wrong?

I am not following you. Is this really a big deal? Here is a picture I took of the one at Indian Kitchen. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jYSvSqGbEkYNAX1HPm--_IAfc_C-XKp1/view?usp=sharing I have added at least 3 more. The only thing I care about is they show on the map. If you want to try changing 1 to see if it shows up on the map, I am OK with that.
