Survey vs tracing

Posted by nm7s9 on 1 April 2008 in English.

I totally agree with netman55 about the problems with tracing from imagery.

To get the street names and even more importantly the "onewayness" of the street, you do actually have to drive the street.

As a bonus you can even start to populate the POI database , E.G toilets, parking areas, parks , hospitals, pharmacys, schools etc.

As I said in response to netman55, I think tracing is analogous to stub articles in Wikipedia; they aren't a replacement for the real thing, but provide some useful information in the mean time. I think it also saves time when doing the GPS surveying too, if you know that the area is already traced.

well I traced roads from the yahoo sat pics, I am now tracking the roads with my Satmap(gps) and yeah agree its good to get a road onto the map with a trace from the sat pics, but you cant beat going down the street for real.
