National Cycle Routes Dec 2017.

Posted by maldav on 3 December 2017 in English.

It would appear that the map data used on the OSM Cycle Map overlay is well out of date.in North Yorkshire. Although apparently coming from Sustrans, the data is put onto OpenCycle Map by Andy Allan, and this is then incorporated as the Cycle layer on the Open Street Map. Clearly this stage of the data transfer is subject to massive overload of changing problems and priorities.

I don’t think Andy pulls in data directly from Sustrans - he just uses whatever data is in the main OSM database.

So if we’re out of date then fix it and it should show up on the cycle layer - just be careful of any license issues if using Sustrans as a source rather than surveying on the ground.

I would be wary of trusting the Sustrans map too much, as when I first began editing cycle routes in my area I noticed some signs on the ground disagreed with the Sustrans map. They corrected their map once I emailed them.

If you can - survey the route, make the changes in OSM and also contact Sustrans if their map is wrong.

Also the 52 route you mention in your note has been renamed to “Former RCN 52” https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/5651364 so maybe it’s no longer signposted? (and could maybe be removed if that’s the case).

Don’t forget any changes may take a week or two to show up on Andy’s map.

Could you say what routes you’re talking about? I can’t see any huge divergences. The two York-Tadcaster routes are missing and so too the spur off NCN 67 in Harrogate, but that just needs someone to go and survey them.

The Regional Route 52 mentioned above (did you edit your posting?) has been renumbered and slightly rerouted to become National Route 165 - as is the case for most Regional Routes outside East Anglia.

Richard, I clicked on maldav’s location and saw a note here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/note/1227280#map=14/54.4893/-1.1352&layers=N - where the Sustrans route differs from OSM.
