OpenStreetMap

Copyright question

Posted by liftarn on 8 September 2014 in English.

Our page on copyrights says “You are free to copy, distribute, transmit and adapt our data, as long as you credit OpenStreetMap and its contributors.”. Ok, if I find out that someone is using OSM data without attribution like http://mapedy.com/ could I, as a contributor, file a complaint or would it have to come from OSM centrally?

Given the small size of the OSMF it is clear that we rely on some policing at a local level as long as we are talking about friendly reminders that attribution of OSM is required.

You should however be sure that attribution is actually missing. There is no requirement to up front declare that a product is based on OSM. Naturally it would be good form to do so, but we are not in the business of teaching people manners.

If there is no obvious and clear attribution in the app itself then it should be added.

Credit to the map must only be given when the map is installed.

Although I don’t like Mapedy (since it just takes code from OsmAnd and adds some advertisement and some new icons), they aren’t doing a lot wrong.

When you look in their “about” part, you see they credit both OsmAnd and OpenStreetMap. They don’t offer the source-code for download, and they don’t tell the licenses, so they’re not completely OK, but they’re not completely bad either.

I wrote a similar diary entry and also asked a question in the forum. I wrote a few emails and after quite a while I received a positive reply and they added an OSM attribution to the map.see https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/30167/osm-map-used-without-any-copyright-notice
