OpenStreetMap

This weekend with my new SE C702 mobile phone I went cycling around my town, tracking all the way. Sunday I then started to edit in the new ways and noted how much the online osm map is misaligned with my data.

With a margin of error of around 9 to 13 metres, I guess I cannot take my GPX points as gospel, yet my tracks consistently shows my reported route as being 20 metres off from that as reported by the main openstreetmap map. So I adjusted it accordingly.

It is very satisfying to be able to enter such vast amounts of new data to a map entry of my town that was previously only three main roads in total.

Now to enter the street names from a municipal map and wait for Wednesday to see the newly rendered map for my area.

Be careful about the street names, due to copyright from the municipal map. Hopefully it is public domain, or compatible with OSM, otherwise you will have to go out and note down all the street names from street signs like I have to!!
Usually it's best to ask on the Legal talk mailing list to see if it's ok to use.
