OpenStreetMap

yesterday I used my alternative route out of Makati CBD to get to SM Sta. Mesa and decided again to know if OSM will route me to my intended road. The route is dela costa, tordesillas, malugay, ayala avenue extension, south ave, kalayaan, pililla, osmena, to get to the bridge then go under it to cross to mandaluyong via mabini and zamora side streets.

the route will pass by only two traffic signals and really fast (it's a secret only OSM users will find) rather than use the makati avenue, bunedia or paseo de roxas that can get you out of makati in about 30 minutes...just a short distance with much time involved.

anyway, I noticed there's a missing service road on the map, one way that is, will correct it later then re-test when i decide to pass by there again

I sometimes use bikeroutetoaster.com to check routing.
sometimes I find a bridge with 2 one way lanes going the same direction and can fix it quickly.

What I don't understand is why my garmin unit doesn't like to route to a point on my local highway when using OSM maps when using a 2.8 gig map file. I suspect it may be from people using huge relations and the garmin might not like to calculate things over X kilometers in length. Or maybe it depends on who compiles the routable map (using a local 100 meg file worked ok).

alexz, i'm also using garmin, a nuvi 1300 though I still don't know the routing algorithm garmin is using to calculate the route. suspect it's mostly weighed on the distance and the highway type. tags for max_speed and number of lanes may also come to play. I only experiment with routing in makati to check and correct if i can but i don't really need it as i can navigate around the city with ease. not so with wifey who i cautioned not to trust the GPS completely :(

was able to test this today and there's a slight error still for mabini is under makati-manda bridge and not directly linked to it. will check tomorrow
