100€ for a subscription to diary comments

Posted by Zverik on 29 September 2016 in English. Last updated on 30 September 2016.

Okay, I’ve got tired of this UI, and I’m swamped with other tasks, but there is some money left from my travel to SotM. So I am announcing a grant: 100€ for a merged pull request allowing people to subscribe to comments in OSM user diaries. (NB: 300€ now, thanks to Stereo and Mikel.)

There should be a checked by default checkbox near the “Save” button (“Receive notifications about further comments”), and a button to subscribe/unsubscribe. All notifications should go to e-mail, much like changeset comments now.

When you have your pull request merged, I’ll transfer that money to your card or bank account. And of course I’ll publish a big thank you :)

The offer is not indefinite: the PR must be submitted until the 1st of November and merged before the 1st of December. And yes, there might be a competition, in that case OWG will decide the winner by merging a pull request.

Good idea - let’s see if the grant works! I’ve been working recently to make the code (and the tests) around diary entries easier to work with. It’s not as simple yet as it could be, but I’d be happy to review pull requests. Hopefully in future these sort of features will be even easier to develop.

Note that it’s not OWG as a group, but the maintainer for the openstreetmap-website codebase, that decides whether pull requests are merged.

The diaries contain so many useful resources, it such a pity its a pain to browse and search :/

For UI ideas, one is https://www.mapbox.com/osm-diary/ which lists all the posts from the Mapbox data team from the RSS feed. Getting updated on comments is a great idea.

Searching works pretty well with Google: e.g. on diversity.

I agree we could add many features. For example, post ratings, so you could browse only posts other people liked. The navigation using language and user filters works pretty okay, rss — not so much because of spam. I choose comment subscription because it’s one thing that bugs me every day.

I’ll match your pledge, so it’s 200€ total now.

@Zverik this is a great idea, and I’d love to see this. It doesn’t look too complicated, based on what’s in place for changeset subscriptions.

Going further, I’d love to have a single page where I can see all the changesets and diaries I’ve subscribed to, along with details on the latest comments / whatever I haven’t seen yet.

And sure, I’ll put in 100 EUR too.

This is what BountySource is for.. Maybe we should set it up on openstreetmap-website?

Mikel, that looks cool! I mentioned a checkbox, though with an automatic subscription and a visible “unsubscribe” button it can be omitted I guess.

Bryan, BountySource doesn’t look too good: 10% on cash outs, and they send money only by paypal (which has issues when sending money to e.g. Russia) or physical checks.

And PR accepted! @Zverik @Stereo, let’s make donations to https://donate.openstreetmap.org/

Nice job everyone!

Donated! Congratulations @mikelmaron and thank you very much! It’s very noble of you to ask for the reward to be donated.

Now if we could get @mentions working… :)
