Google Maps Mutator β

Posted by Komяpa on 17 October 2009 in English.

Thanks to http://www.mapsurfer.net, Google Maps Mutator is now beta, with new features!

- Base Map layer shows OpenStreetMap Mapnik instead of Google Maps;
- Hybrid Layer now shows OpenStreetMap on top of Google Satellite (thanks to mapsurfer.net for rendering);
- Terrain Map now shows OpenStreetMap with SRTM data.

How to enable Google Maps Mutator

Open your /etc/hosts file with text editor and add this line (for windows - c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts):

86.57.245.71 mt0.google.com mt1.google.com mt2.google.com mt3.google.com mt.google.com

...but what if I want the functionality, just with a OSM map instead of a google one?

Comment from Komяpa on 17 October 2009 at 15:57

Ehi? what functionality breaks with the change?

The mapsurfer colours are wonderful (apart from footways). If only the official OSM map looked like this.

I think Paul Johnson would like the official tiles. I'd prefer that too, your server is slow for me.

HannesHH, official tiles are served on "Map" layer. MapSurfer is used only on hybrid/terrain, since official mapnik doesn't provide those.

Edited my host file entry. Working so far. It's really nice to see the OSM as the background to the geocaching maps. PS. firefox running on Linux.

Just as a side not, converting OSM data using pyMagellan to load OSM maps onto my eXplorest 500

Wow, that's a very neat trick. Really does make you appreciate how much faster Google serves up tiles though. :(

I've added line above into my c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts then restarted Opera and nothing changed. I've tryed to restart computer and then run Opera again. so i still can't see any result. What am i doing wrong?

Fortress, are you sure you are not using a caching proxy? If yes, you should put those lines to /etc/hosts on a machine that runs a proxy (if you can, of course), not on your local machine.

Traffic info and labels on the satellite layer don't appear to appear.

Comment from Komяpa on 23 October 2009 at 13:00

OSM doesn't supply traffic info, so I've got no tiles to show there.
Labels aren't available outside Europe, since mapsurfer.net doesn't have enough hardware power to render those. Help them :)

Comment from Baloo Uriza on 24 October 2009 at 23:35

Why not just pass the Google info if equivalent OSM data isn't available?

Comment from Fortress on 26 October 2009 at 08:23

Yes, im using corporative proxy and of'cource i can't access it. Damn shit :(

I'm wondering if the Terrain layer could use the OpenCycleMap render since it has very good elevation data and being able to see bike routes within the google maps view would be handy in many cities.
