OS OpenData Street View in JOSM

Posted by Kevin Steinhardt on 1 September 2010 in English.

I know this sounds like a random thing to ask but... does anyone know how to get the Street Views tiles working in JOSM, as (let's say) a WMS layer? I tried with what I thought was the URL and appropriate syntax, but I got 'Exception occured's all over the screen.

I use them with the slippymap plugin; I think I had them working as a WMS layer, but the alignment seemed to change slightly every time I started JOSM. Seems consistent with the slippymap plugin.

I'm fairly sure I followed the instructions here:

Occasionally when I've used them in JOSM I get Exception images too. I think that it's just when the WMS times out, presumably because it's busy producing the tiles for others to view. Usually when I try later it works. In an effort to keep the burden that I create on the WMS to a minimum I try to zoom in quite tightly to just the area I'm interested in -- I can always subsequently pan slightly if I haven't covered quite enough area.

The SlippyMap plugin doesn't appear to work at my end; I've added the URLs through the Advanced Prefs, but it just doesn't want to download any StreetView tiles. I've tried, using the wiki instructions, getting it working with WMS but it doesn't seem to like that either. I'll use Potlatch for now; cheers for your help, Ed.

Gregory: it's just giving me blankness; just not loading anything. No red tiles; just blackness. It's all rather upsetting.

Sometimes it seems to take quite a while to load - so it's blackness for a while - then the tiles start loading.

WMS method:
I've also had problems a number of times with using WMS layers in JOSM. Have you tried using other WMS layers and seeing whether you have the same problem with those, or are you just having problems with the OS StreetView WMS?

Sometimes I've found after waiting a while I still have a black screen, or I have 'Exception occurred' red tiles. When this happens I delete the WMS from the layers panel (at the top right) in JOSM, and reload it - it often seems to work the second time. I usually adjust my position on the map and zoom level before reloading it - but I'm not sure that is necessary.

SlippyMap method:
I've not really found any problems with this except when zoomed in more than a certain level, which has resulted in a blank (grey) screen. To fix this go into the SlippyMap plugin settings (one of the tabs in JOSM preferences) and ensure that 'Max zoom lvl' is set to 17. Also make sure that you have OS StreetView selected in 'Tile Sources', that 'autozoom' and 'autoload tiles' are ticked.

I've been using the WMS layer in JOSM for just under a week now and I've got quite a lot of tracing done; no emergence of this alignment shifting, though.
