OpenStreetMap

Thank you to everyone who has responded so far...

Following on from the responses generated last week I would like to ask some more questions to do with mapping parties and the social aspect of mapping:

1) How far will you/ have you travelled to attend a mapping party?

2) Do you feel OSM mapping parties form an important part of your social life?

3) Are you primarily concerned with the mapped progress of your local (home) area, or with the success of the OSM project in general?

If you would like to share your opinions with me, and contribute to my dissertation, please respond here or by messaging me via the site or at caroline.hangartner@student.manchester.ac.uk

Thanks again,

Caroline

High CarolineH,

1) How far will you/ have you travelled to attend a mapping party?
Several Kilometres - maybe up to 25 (oneway) for a maximum of once a month.

2) Do you feel OSM mapping parties form an important part of your social life?
No, since I have not been at any (there are no such parties nearby.

3) Are you primarily concerned with the mapped progress of your local (home) area, or with the success of the OSM project in general?
Honestly, I canĀ“t tell you. 50/50.

Yours,

Wolfgang

1) How far will you/ have you travelled to attend a mapping party?
The longest trips so far are: Edinburgh to London on a coach overnight, and London to Dublin rail and sail, with the bike.
Generally it is just across London, or sometimes to the other side of the UK

2) Do you feel OSM mapping parties form an important part of your social life?
Yep

3) Are you primarily concerned with the mapped progress of your local (home) area, or with the success of the OSM project in general?
Of course I want the area that I live to be properly mapped, and want osm to succeed.

ricosi64: If there are no mapping parties in your part of the world, why don't you start running one?

1) How far will you/ have you travelled to attend a mapping party?
London to Limmerick, Ireland for the conference. I cycled 4 hours to get to an evening party once, but I did some mapping on the way and it was about an hour on the less direct trains home. I consider 3 hours a bit to far.

2) Do you feel OSM mapping parties form an important part of your social life?
A very important part of my mapping social life and mapping is a big part of my life. My non-geek social life only requires me to sit on the sofa in my house shared with 6 mates.

3) Are you primarily concerned with the mapped progress of your local (home) area, or with the success of the OSM project in general?
The greater success. I spent my family holiday mapping around the cottage we stayed at. I started my website because it's about filling in another white area. It's easier to focus on a local area and see how OSM can be adapted/used for the area's uniqueness. When I get round to building new systems/renders, I hope there will be some other unusually places that will make use of what I did just for Durham/Hampton (my 2 homes).
