  1. Vietnamese main roads are usually well-mapped and accurate. However, smaller alleys are often not mapped (and if mapped they aren’t always accurate) due to poor imagery. Surveying is often essential for these roads.
  2. Most small houses in Vietnam are not accurately mapped. They are usually generated by RapiD, which is completely useless due to Vietnam’s “tube houses” (nhà ống, see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tube_house). Again, you need surveying to accurately determine whether the row of houses are all “tube houses” or contains big houses that have shared walls with the tube houses.
  3. Street name format are not consistent in OSM. “Ngõ 31 Trần Nhân Tông”, “Ngõ 31 Phố Trần Nhân Tông” or simply “Ngõ 31” are all apparently valid? Looking at the wiki there is no defined convention. So I just picked the “Ngõ (alley number) (street name)” for clarity and brevity.
  4. Many POIs are seemingly imported from Google Maps, with suspiciously detailed information in a wrong spot of the street.
  5. Vietnam’s map is aligned to OSM’s GPS, but they can be offseted by up to 5 meters. I usually use Strava layer to more precisely align the highways and features.
  6. Traffic lights in Vietnam is a mess.
  7. Pedestrian roads are often not mapped, which is understandable since they are often used as free space to park vehicles and add obstructing features.
  8. Urban planning map can be surprisingly helpful/useless for mapping land use depending on the amount of change in the area.

If you think mapping has been imported from Google, add a comment to the changeset asking about the origin and tell the Data Working Group.

Street name format are not consistent in OSM.

Best see if you can contact other mappers in the country and get agreement on how to handle them. Potentially it is also a good idea to get input from the Nominatim maintainers.

That’s a common fact (educated observation) of mapping in these regions - using data from Google. A lot more probably comes from Streetview. Partly due to ignorance of copyright laws, and partly due to #dontgiveashit mentality. The clever ones put source = local knowledge, and then who are you to judge where they get their info from?

A conundrum for DWG for sure. My suggestion is just let things be unless they are so obviously copied from Google. If for some unforeseen reason that ABC called for a strikedown on those edits, then purge and redo.
