Solo Project: Indoor Mapping of my University Campus - First mapping experience!

Amazing to see so many details in San Juan area.

Indoor mapping (with multiple floor levels) is a difficult task, and even major airports (Frankfurt, Heathrow) are hardly mapped.

Outdoor mapping is still a major task. Many streets have been imported from government sources. Especially in Puerto Rico, there are many rural tracks which are hardly accessible with regular vehicles. Nobody has ever checked how useful these rural tracks are. There may be unmapped pedestrian shortcuts, closed streets, turn restrictions and impassable tracks. Any student (especially from rural areas) is invited to report errors.

New Users

When sending urgent messages to major mappers, I got a response rate of 50-60%. Only 1 of 5 has sent me a short personal message, the other ones have just pressed an OK button. 40-50% have disappeared without notice.

Some mappers have used a temporary mail address for signing up. Some mappers have forgotten their password. Some mappers don’t read every message.

A meeting of 10 mappers is a big event, even in a city with 1 million inhabitants.

Thank you for your trust!

(Blogger-)Geist gegen (Administratoren-)Gewalt!

Please add your references to our map.
You may simply add surface=paved to all roads you have paved so far.

Dirt Roads

Welcome to our project!

Our roads were imported from TIGER, which is free, but not perfect US federal government data. It includes all ways where US federal or state officers ever have driven with their vehicles. Many roads have been automatically converted to "residential". That's obviously wrong in many parts of the United States and we need to correct them:

- tertiary roads are numbered county roads serving as collector roads, e.g. this gravel road from Breckenridge to Como:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.4151&lon=-105.9592&zoom=13&layers=M
- minor / unclassified roads are maintained rural roads
- residential roads are urban or suburban roads
- track is a unmaintained or hardly maintained way for 4WD verhicles
- footway is a well-maintained footpath, e.g. in a city park
- cycleway is a well-maintained cycleway, e.g. as part of a greenbelt
- path is a trail only for hikers, maybe also for horses or mountainbikes

And finally, some roads don't exist at all:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=40.78283&lon=-72.93809&zoom=15&layers=M
They have never been built because the real estate agent went bankrupt before he was able to start housing construction.

- You may remove all non-existing ways (by clicking on the trashbox)
- You are invited to downgrade all unmaintained / unsurfaced ways to "track" (if accessible by 4WD) or "path" (if accessible on foot / by mountainbike)
- On the left toolbar, you can see a button "residential road". If you click on this button, you will see a selection of other alternatives:
- Roads (suitable for cars, at least for SUV) -> track
- Tracks (not suitable for cars) -> generic path
- With the second tab below the road type button "labelled "D.."), you can add a surface (dirt / gass / gravel).

It will take some time to check all roads manually, and of course we cannot take any guarantee whether you can drive safely with an SUV on any of these roads.

Creation of special map

1. osmconvert and osmfilter (working like MS-DOS) or XAPI in order to extract data (like power) from a continent file or from the database
2. Kosmos / Maperitive enables to create a map for different features. The dataset is extracted from planetfile or from XAPI, the ruleset for rendering is created on the wiki.

P.S.: Don't forget: 16.7 is also valid in Austria and Switzerland though Swiss mappers have not been active adding them to the map.

TREKKING/HIKING AMALFI COAST

You are welcome, we are looking forward for many edits within this neglected area.

URLs within this blog don't increase your pagerank because robots don't follow this blog.

OSM/OSMF has become a farce

You are right!

participants list

It's great to see the growing mapper community in Yerevan, Armenia! However, this is a worldwide blog, and non-Armenian mappers would like to see even in the headline where it happens:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=40.1695&lon=44.5305&zoom=12&layers=M

As you can still edit your blog, please add Yerevan, Armenia to the headline, so that non-Armenaian mappers can decide whether to participate or not. Thanks!

Coast-to-coast powerline is now complete

A map should be visible when the wiki works again!

How we should classify powerlines

Dear Obelixx,

please feel free to add your suggestions to
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Power_transmission_refinement

Don't you just love it....

It would be useful if you had taken a photo as a proof.

Local weighting for local mappers?

Sorry, but GPS tracks are usually about 10 metres off, especially when walking, depending on weather conditions. GPS tracks are only more accurate if they trace a recently built street which does not appear on Yahoo/Bing images. That's why I don't rely on GPS tracks where accurate aerial images are available.

Where did you experience edits from non-local mappers?

Yours, FK270673

amenity=restaurant
name=Zum Ochsen
cuisine=german

Researching in Users and uses

It is generally useful to post a short abstract of the questionnaire in order to convince mappers to respond. "Users and Use Requirements in Neogeography Maps" is too abstract.

If you are interested in responses from Dutch mappers, ask here:

If you are interested in responses from German mappers, ask here:
