I've only been working on Kampala for a few short weeks, and haven't really gotten out and about as much as I'd like but it never ceases to amaze me how empty the mapped landscape is for this city. I'm somewhere around 700 waypoints marked on my GPS plus some hundreds of pictures (now that I've figured out a reliable photo mapping method), and I've barely viewed half the city which is a rough quick view at that.

I do a full write up on my blog http://blog.wonderfullyrich.net/2010/01/uganda-treats-you-right/ , but the long and short is that by virtue of asking the question "Is this the UN Clinic" I got detained for 5 hours, was checked by US Embassy Officials for outstanding warrants, and got bugger all done yesterday.

Truthfully, we should probably figure out something that gives creditably to volunteers for OSM. Perhaps something that can more easily explain what I'm doing. The biggest challenge was going from the Police Guard's limited knowledge of the internet to an Cloud based mapping system. (Literally it took hours to convey it properly.)

Ran an errand today, which I detoured around the Kyambogo and Banda suburbs. This was very prelimiary, but I have to admit there's a huge dry spot of taggable elements (from a car) in the Kyambogo/Banda area. I use this list http://mapkibera.org/wiki/index.php?title=Mapping_Users_Needs as my model of what to look out for, focusing specifically on Churches, NGOs, and schools.

I finally found a good driver to take me around kampala, so this is the first of several traces I hope to upload and map. This is of the Luzira, Mutungo, and Mbuya suburbs. I've got over 100 waypoints for today too, but that's likely to take a bit of time to tag.
