Week of May 13-19

Updated geometry and attribute updates to Bob Hope Airport, Burbank California. Some people make some elaborate geometry edits to follow the taxilines for aircraft, but when you do this it makes labeling (naming) the geometry very difficult. Happened quite a bit at Bob Hope Airport.Taxilines don’t neccessarily equal taxiways. My wife and I fly out of Bob Hope every time we go home to visit family.

Updated geometry and attribute data for Sacramento Mather Airport, in Rancho Cordova, California. I flew T-43s here in 1983 and again in 1989-1991 when it was Mather Air Force Base. Updated geometry and attribute information for University Airport, near Davis, California.

Week of April 22-17

Posted by verticalgeo on 23 April 2013 in English. Last updated on 25 April 2013.

Updated some geometry at the Placerville and Rancho Murietta Airports in the foothills near my old hometown of Placerville, California. I learned to fly at both of these airports and they are still close to my heart eventhough I now live 2/3 of the way across the us in O’Fallon, Illinois. I do have a couple of questions with regards to airports.

  1. How do you mark PAPI, VASI, VOR, and other Navigational Aids at airports. The wiki says to use aeroway=vasi or aeroway=papi, and I don’t see any tags listed for VORs, TACANs, DMEs, etc. When I tag my edits as aeroway=vasi or aeroway=papi they don’t show up. Is there a better way to tag the edits?

  2. Who decides the geographical limits of an aerodrome?

I guess I’ll ask the question on talk-us

Added the Osan Hotel and the SongTan Bus Terminal in SongTan, South Korea. I lived there in 2000 and 2001 and I spent a lot of time in both locations and have a lot of memories there.

Updated geometries at Mammoth Yosemite Airport near one of the most incredible places on earth, Mammoth Lakes, California.

We had a good meeting at the OpenStreetMap St Louis inaugural event last week at the St Louis Bread Company in Shiloh, Illinois. We had 7 ArcGIS experts from Scott Air Force Base, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and the National GeoSpatial-Intelligence Agency show up who were looking for more information on OpenStreetMap. We discussed the background of OSM, the basics of the slippy map, how to update using Potlatch, what types of mapping activities are a good fit for OSM, and what we want to do with the group in the future. We went over several of the slides Wil Skora used a couple of weeks back at the OSM Cleveland meeting. We would have had at least 2 more mappers show, but we got hit with an afternoon snow and ice storm that kept them away. We will shoot for meeting every quarter on the Third Thursday of the Month. I’m planning on our next meeting being on April 18. I’d like do an outdoor project and meet outside of the cabin in Rock Springs Park in O’Fallon, Illinois and clean up the OpenStreetMap basemap of the park. I will post an event for this a week or so out. Please feel welcome to join us whether or not you were part of our original group

Week of 27 January - 2 February

Posted by verticalgeo on 29 January 2013 in English. Last updated on 30 January 2013.

Added the local folklore of the 7 Gates of Hell to the map.. Added in some new roads between O’Fallon and Troy, Illinois. Updated the geometry and attribute data of several [roads] (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=38.68135&lon=-120.84667&zoom=16&layers=M) in Placerville, California area (my old hometown). The OSM road structure there is so messed up that I don’t know if it will ever look good. I will just keep taking bitesized chunks until it looks right. There must not be any OSM junkies up in Placerville, because I don’t think anyone has looked at the road network since the original import.

I don’t have a good workflow yet. Seems like I am very disorganized. I start working on updating an area and before you kn ow it I have moved on to another section without completing my original project. Completed about 70 edits this week. Finished updating some of the local roads around [Kaskaskia College] (http://www.kaskaskia.edu) [Map] (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=38.56201&lon=-89.19414&zoom=15&layers=M) near Centralia, Illinois. Also did a substantial number of edits in the local [O’Fallon, Illinois] (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=38.6041&lon=-89.9468&zoom=12&layers=M) area.
