I noticed some classification changes in and around Agua Prieta, Mexico, and was wondering if there is a specific resource you’re referencing to determine these updates?

Some of the features upgraded to trunk (such as way/31067345 to way/983609238) now end abruptly or are isolated from the greater trunk network. There are similar cases that travel along the MEX 2 within Agua Prieta itself (such as way/312995491 to way/312993704 and way/312993708 to way/983908761). According to the wiki page for motorways, this classification is reserved for highways of highest importance and should be used on roads with control of access designed for high-speed vehicular traffic (highway=motorway).

The residential roads (such as way/240736797 and way/239607538) that connect to Rodovia Governador Mário Covas/BR-101 (way/775578513) do not have access controlled ramps which does not align with the Brazil international equivalence for motorways (osm.wiki/International_highway_classification_equivalence). For the most part, those look well documented and clear in the approach to routes that should be classified as trunks. However, in regard to the Ejes de Transporte page with lists of routes and the map of them provided there, there is at least one instance where the current OSM data does not match:

The MEX 175, MEX 175D is currently classified as motorway and trunk along way/344953332  https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/783095840 but it is not listed on the Ejes de Transporte wiki page. Do you know if there is an updated map that includes that route for completeness? If you do have access to that information could you update the wiki page with it? The Brazil community guidelines for tertiary highways states “unpaved federal highways are marked as highway=tertiary” (osm.wiki/Brazil/Rodovias_Federais). Many of these tertiary highways are rural and unpaved yet they are not federal highways as they terminate as an access driveway to single houses mostly. Federal highways in Brazil are commonly denoted with a ref tag containing the letters “BR” followed by a dash and a numerical value of up to three numbers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federal_highways_in_Brazil).

I do have another question for you regarding additional secondary highways in Cancun if you are able to take a look. What do you think about reclassifying www.openstreetmap.org/way/167990302 and www.openstreetmap.org/way/167552879 to tertiary? The guidelines on the OSM Wiki (highway=tertiary) states that "tertiary highways commonly connect minor streets to more major roads and provide access to town centers.”, and they often times provide access into residential areas.

If these are proposed to be secondary highways like the previous ones we discussed, would adding “proposed=secondary” tag in addition to “highway=tertiary”, accomplish the same goal? Additionally, there are some floating secondaries that dead end without providing further connectivity. (For example, www.openstreetmap.org/way/167552785 and www.openstreetmap.org/way/167990287). Would these be appropriate to reclassify as “highway=residential” with “proposed=secondary” to follow the same system too? They are currently minor highway segments that provide access to homes along the highway. Looking at Esri World Imagery, the road infrastructure and surface quality appear to be in development and currently function better as residential.

In the aerial resource Esri World Imagery, the highway appears to be under development. Looking at the OSMwiki (highway=*), primary highway features are highways of higher importance that link larger towns. Currently these do not provide access to the rest of the highway network or provide connectivity to towns in Nicaragua.

While editing in Brazil I have noticed some roads have been upgraded to tertiary highways such as way/1310651907 and way/1309874705. According to the wiki (highway=*) tertiary highways often connect small towns and villages, but I notice many of these tertiary highways are rural and often times extend to small residences. Additionally many of the highways extend from a lower classified highway which isolates them from the rest of the highway network. What do you think about changing these highways to a lower classification such as highway=residential?

For instances where these highways don't extend to any homes (for example way/1309490968 and way/1309489560), do you agree the classification would be better as unclassified? highway=* mentions that unclassified roads are reserved for highways of low importance that serve a purpose other than providing access to properties.

There are a few secondary highway features in Cancun, Mexico I wanted to clarify with you: way/680187616 and way/440807491. These highways do not appear to be fully developed in Esri World Imagery and according to the OSM Wiki (proposed=*) these features may be better set as highway=residential and proposed=secondary. Esri world imagery indicates that there are a limited number of homes and the highway quality appears to be an ongoing improvement. Once construction and development are complete, I believe the best approach would be then updating to the new higher classification as appropriate. Hello, the resources that I cited were the publicly available resources in JOSM. Strava does not have a confirmable date that I know of. The most recent date of OSM GPS traces varies by area, but the most up to date trace is 03/09/2023. Esri World Imagery is from 01/23/2023. At this time, I do not have anything up to date to confirm the current extent of flooding in Brazil, and I will defer to your knowledge of the area.
