The entire talk page can be disregarded, but whatever is derived from there and put on the wiki page, holds as binding (which makes perfect for Talk pages as a place for debate). Therefore, the entire paragraph in the wiki (also if based on the unbinding Talk statements) is valid and binding. And according to that paragraph, as it is written now, "the contents of the sign, as it would be *read* from beginning to end" is to be provided. Moreover, the osm.wiki/Invalid_Abbreviation_Expansion doesn't provide any example for German abbreviation "St." resolving to "Sankt" but only the English ones resolving to "Saint". Furthermore, it doesn't matter whether "St." (read as "Sankt") is an abbreviation or not, since the "Value" paragraph of "Key:destionation" only focuses on the "be the contents of the sign, as it would be *read* from beginning to end". |
| 155647255 | about 1 year ago | @mcliquid, the official documentation corresponds to the wiki page and not to the talk page. The sentence "Until a consensus is reached please discuss with the original mapper before changing an existing value's state of abbreviation." has been removed from the wiki page (i.e. official documentation) in this revision: osm.wiki/w/index.php?title=Key:destination&diff=1284776&oldid=1284338 therefore this provisional policy is no longer in effect as long as this sentence is not reinstated on the wiki page (not talk page). Furthermore, the content of the signpost here is "St. Gallen" but it would be *read* from beginning to end as "Sankt Gallen" and since the sentence "as it would be *read* from beginning to end" adds to "the content of signposts or ground writing indicating the names of the locations that the tagged way is heading to" without any contradition, then both rules apply. |
| 155647255 | about 1 year ago | @mcliquid, according to the official documentation of "Key:destination" in the wiki, the value for this tag "should be contents of the sign, as it would be *read* from beginning to end" incl. 20:1 consensus on whether to use abbreviations that appear on signs is *no*. Note the wording "read" and that this doesn't necessarily correspond the the (primary or official) name of the place as it would be used for "Key:name" or "Key:official_name". See: destination=*#Value |
