Mapping next summers vacation spot

Posted by onion on 21 March 2011 in English.

I'm going to Limnos/Λήμνος this summer for a two week vacation. The osm map pretty much sucked, but I've been using the Bing imagery now to fix that. There is still plenty to do using them and on the ground. Narrow roads in villages are pretty hard to see from the satellite images. But it looks very good already.

When I started the quality of both google and bing was very bad, but looks like bing has improved, google still thinks it's mostly deserted.

We where on vacation to Parga last summer and rented a car for a day, with GPS devices with out. Did some geocaching (some very nice locations) and of course some mapping.
We drove trough the Zagori area and got some nice and twisty mountain roads on the map. Unfortunately I didn't have time to map as much as I liked as we had the car only for one day and driving in the Zagori area takes a while, just look the the roads on the map.

Anyway, now thanks to Bing images I've been able to map more roads, hopefully enough to be of some use if visiting the area. Some local knowledge would of course help, I wonder if there are any local Greek mappers in the area ? It was kinda grey when I started. But it starts to look pretty nice already.

I was fixing up some minor new roads after some construction work and I got this feeling that I have fixed the name for this one road years ago, and looking at the history (http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/4065290/history) I was right. Sigh...
I just wonder how many of these kinds of changes have been made to roads with both Swedish and Finnish names.

I've played around a bit with gstreamer, to create jpegs with lat,lon data from a live video for some easy photomapping.

Basically a "v4l2src ! jpegenc ! metadatamux ! multifilesink" pipeline with some magic in between to set geo tags for the metadatamuxer.
Unfortunately there seems to be a bug somewhere and only the first file written by "multifilesink" gets any exif tags.

Anyway, pretty basic test code is at http://git.tal.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=gpsvideo.git;a=summary

Fixed that last junction with missing roads (12) yesterday, so now all junctions should be done. The road going over the motorway needs a bit of work as it was very wrong (partialy on the junction road itself?) at the junction point and is now just dragged to match the turn I made back.

Maemo Summit 2009

Posted by onion on 12 October 2009 in English.

I was lucky enough to be able to attend Maemo Summit this year. The event was really nice and had many interesting talks, you can find a lot on the maemo wiki, pictures on flickr, etc. Just google and you will find. The biggest surprise was that everyone attending got a N900 for 6 months to play with.

Relating to OSM, Till presented OSM2go and the OSM project in general, with some nice example of why OSM rocks :) Look here: http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/11/maemo-summit-liveblog-day-3/ (at about 10:45)

As a good OSMer I did some mapping at the summit venue (mentioned there too). Some of the information is waiting in my camera and N810 to get processed.

Multiple names and double work

Posted by onion on 27 July 2009 in English.

I don't understand why it's so hard for people to map properly in places with both Finnish and Swedish names. There are plenty of places with otherwise really nice and good work, but all or most of the Swedish road names are missing. Now someone needs to go trough all of them *again* just to make them properly complete. A big waste of resources that could have instead been used to map something new.
(And yes, I've done that too in the beginning before there was a clear way to tag other languages, but that is what.. 2-3 years ago already.)

Mapper audio note system

Posted by onion on 18 April 2008 in English.

Mapper gained some kind of audio note taking system some weeks ago, and I finally had a chance to properly test it by doing some mapping, so I mapped the Kohmo and Pääskyvuori suburbs in Turku, a couple of days ago and it went pretty well after figuring out how to sync the audio note with my track in JOSM.
The only negative with audio notes is my own voice.. can't stand it. (And speaking to yourself in an empty car, feels a bit stupid)
