Hi,

The data I uploaded is mile post data for the railroads across Nebraska. Much like highway mile markers/reference posts, this information is used by train crews and dispatchers alike to coordinate movements along rail lines. The same information can be found here: https://fragis.fra.dot.gov/gisfrasafety/.

The three pieces of information within each node are as follows: "MILEPOST" is actual numerical value in miles from the start of the point of measurement. For example...along the Union Pacific line across Nebraska (original transcontinental railroad), the numbers increase as you head west. In this case, they are counting the number of miles from the spot where rails were first laid in Omaha. So North Platte, NE is located along Mile Post 283 which is 283 miles west along the route from Omaha.

"OR_SUBDIVI" is the namesake for the line, or Subdivision, which is typically named after the town or city a yard is located in along the line. Examples across Nebraska are the Union Pacific's Omaha Subdivision, Columbus Subdivision, Kearney Subdivision, and Sidney Subdivision.

And finally, the "RAILROAD" is the owner (company) of said line. Combining all three pieces is how rail crews and dispatches identify where they are at usually (in the old days before computers tracked everything now). So a train entering Kearney, NE would identify themselves as being at Mile Post 188 of the UP Kearney Subdivision.

All this information is from the FRA GIS website (link above).
