Good point. It is nice to match the signs. I cannot remember seeing a sign around this area with the abbreviation on it. However, I have notices new signs are showing up with "Forest Road XX" on them. Some signs are just like the regular green street name signs. I like FR because it make sense. NF is not an abbreviation for anything currently used by the forest service. I will try to check with the people at the forest service and see if they have a standard they use.

Hello Adam. Thanks for the updates. Just one question. Are you tagging some of the roads as "National Forest Development Road XX"? I have a hard time following the history, so I am not sure exactly what all changed. I use to always tag them that way but that terminology is not use by the Forest service any more and not recommended by OSM. See osm.wiki/United_States_roads_tagging#National_Forest_Road_System. There is another reason I like the newer terminology. The old name was long enough that the number would get clipped off the name in some renderings of the map data.
