| 60165017 | over 7 years ago | Hmm, my reply isn't showing yet. I'll just post another one here. In short, Hindi is the local and official language for Hindi states. (I'm not going to bother "localizing" South Indian states) There is absolutely no reason to use English (or romanised Hindi as the Wiki says) in place of the local language. The name tag is used only for the local language, there's no ambiguity here. Local language is what street signs, road names, etc. are written in. The idea of using English for all of India for "consistency" is a moot point as OSM is mapped by local mappers, many of which may not know English. Gatekeeping the default language in OSM restricts OSM mapping in India to the English-speaking people (only 12% of India). India isn't any special than other multilingual countries shown on OSM like Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, etc., all of which use multiple languages (other than English) as the default names. - jmacker |
