I combined a single node with the building that was a clinic using shift ctrl and G and the single node had the tag notes=YES, tagged by a previous mapper, the tag was transferred to the building. I have removed it now so all is well with the world!

HI Charles,

Just a technical note as regards a dam. In Zambia and in Southern Africa in general we call the body of water a dam, this is technically not correct. A dam is the wall that holds back the water, ie it dams the water. The water behind the wall is called a reservoir or lake. In parts of the world the dam (or dam wall as we call it here) may have a different name to the lake or reservoir. For example Lake Mead in Nevada, USA (relation/1275469#map=17/36.01666/-114.73549) is the name of the reservoir held back by the Hoover Dam, the name of the wall. The water feature, already mapped, is as a result of people digging out stone to make crushed stone, it is therefore not a reservoir but could be possibly tagged as a pond.

Charles,

You are still adding totally incorrect information to places you have no idea about. Chit Chat closed many years ago but you have added payment and internet information to it.

You have no idea as to what the Murray Memorial Chapel actually is and yet you have replaced the correct street address with a totally incorrect one and internet connectivity information.

I doubt you have even been to any of the points you have edited here and yet you have added payment information and internet access information.

What you are tagging is as effective as vandalism although I know you do not intend to add incorrect information, you are just guessing but the effect is just as bad.

Hi,

I appreciate you taking note of this. Wards are political subdivisions of constituencies so the tag of locality does not accurately represent the data you are trying to tag.

If you refer to the Wiki, place=locality?uselang=en-GB, you will see that the tag locality should be used for an area that is not a town or actual physical place but has a name that refers to it. An example I can think of is Katuba on the Great North Road, there is no town there called Katuba, there is a Katuba river but the area around this river along the Great North Road is called Katuba and the toll plaza there is called the Katuba Toll Plaza so Katuba is a locality, the ward names are derived from the locality names in rural areas, while in towns and cities they are derived from suburbs. Another example would be Landless Corner, there is no town by that name, the name refers to the junction of the Old Mumbwa Road and the Great North Road and gets its name from the Landless family who have owned the farm at this junction from the early 1900s. The area is now known as Landless Corner and so the tag locality fits this area.

I would not recommend adding ward names to the map as they are political administrative divisions and should be mapped as a boundary and so difficult to map as they can change over time. They are similar to parishes in countries like the UK, which originated from the original church administrative regions and are the smallest local government subdivision.

Thanks

Dr Agarwals does have wheelchair access

Charles,

Please stop guessing, I know for a fact that PearliWhite Dental accept payment by card. There is no way you are physically checking all these places you claim to. You are adding nonsense tags to restaurants such as chicken and pizza cuisine to sushi restaurants which is obviously wrong. The way you are mapping makes the accuracy of the map data worse not better and will mean that people will not trust even the accurate data.

You insist on removing card payment data from fuel stations or adding very specific card brands. Nearly every fuel station I have used recently in Lusaka accepts card payments, especially the well known brands such as TotalEnergies, Puma and Rubis.

Just add information that you know is correct.

You are editing a large number of points at one time, some of them are fine as they are. Schools in Zambia are generally non religious, particularly government ones, therefore the tag multifaith is pointless and misleading.

Hi Charles,

DAPP (Development Aid from People to People) supplies "salalula", in other words second hand clothes from Europe so they supply all kinds of clothing for all ages and sexes not just women and they definitely don't sell underwear. As I keep asking you if you are going to add tags, especially to existing points please ensure you are using the correct tags, by adding the incorrect information you are not improving the map but making it worse.

Also rather than adding specific branded cards as a payment method rather use credit_card=yes and debit_card=yes and obviously add cash=yes.

Thanks

Hi Charles,

I don't want to discourage you but ensure you understand the tags you are using. The Hilton Hotel is a multi story building and so can not have the tag building:levels=1, neither does it have a gabled roof. The same is true for Farmers House. The building material used in both these buildings is probably concrete, not brick.

I would suggest you concentrate on adding unmapped information rather than continuously adding information to existing buildings much of which is incorrect. As I have said before unless you know for sure the information you are adding is correct it is better not to add it.

Hi Charles,

Like a teacher or parent I raise my tone when I feel you are consistently making the same errors over and over again. As regards wheelchair access it is important you only tag it as wheelchair accessible if it actually is, with ramps to enter the buildings and elevators or lifts to move between different floors. If you take Central Police Station in Lusaka as an example, the fact somebody in a wheelchair can physically access the premises in a wheelchair through the vehicle entry along Church Road does not mean it is wheelchair accessible, it would be extremely dangerous to do so but even then how do they get into the building? I have been into this building a number of times over a number of years so I know what I am talking about. I have yet to find a police station in Zambia that is truly wheelchair accessible even in a limited capacity. Fuel station forecourts are definitely not wheelchair accessible. Tagging everything internet=no is not helpful. While it is technically true many of the places you tag as such people would not expect to have internet access. This tag is more for use in tourist attractions and public buildings possibly. Tagging a hotel with internet availability and relevant access charges is important for prospective customers as it may influence whether they stay there or not. Tagging police stations with payment information is not helpful, they are not retail operations. Many payments to Government institutions in Zambia have to be in the form of a bank deposit or online because of corruption but it is better not to just assume this as the procedure changes often.

You say you map as you visit places around Lusaka, can I ask when you last visited LAWS (Lusaka Animal Welfare Society) behind ZESCO? You have tagged this with payment options and internet accessibility as well as it having limited wheelchair access. The last time I was there it definitely had no wheelchair access of any sort. This is what I mean by guessing. The Lusaka Grand Hotel you have tagged as having one level, this is incorrect as it definitely has more than one floor.

These are a few of the errors you are making.

By all means keep mapping but make sure you are as accurate as possible, don't add unnecessary tags and don't guess, if you do not know something about a feature don't add it.

Regards

Hi Charles,
You say "i work in field.
Last time when i tried to fixed the Standard Chartered Bank near Northmind and ZRA you argued that the bank is still there while it was removed almost 2 years ago. " I think you are mistaken as to who argued with you, perhaps check on changeset changeset/121645224 to see who was arguing with you. I know Standard Chartered closed there. I live in Lusaka, that is how I know Mugg & Bean accept payment by card. There is no way you are physically checking the places you edit as you cover large areas of the city, how do you get around? The traffic in Lusaka alone would not allow you to physically cover the areas you claim to have checked. I edit those places I know and revert those places that are obvious errors. Fuel stations in Zambia would not be considered wheelchair accessible by any internationally recognised standard perhaps ask any person in a wheelchair how safe they would feel crossing a fuel station forecourt in a wheelchair. I have engaged with you a number of times and offered advice on your tags but you ignore my advise which is frustrating. You are free to tag as you wish but where I find errors or obvious incorrect tags I will correct them as I see fit, if I am unsure of whether a tag is correct or not I leave it. You tag some ATMs with a currency RUB, ATMS in Zambia only dispense or accept Kwacha, ZMW, the local currency nothing else so if you add any other currency you are wrong or just guessing.

If the information added to OSM is inaccurate people will not use it as they will not trust it, I am just trying to ensure the accuracy of the data. In general the data added to the map in Africa is of poor quality as much of it is added by people from outside the continent. 99% of my edits are in Zambia and I have traveled a great deal in Zambia, I do not edit elsewhere.

Hi Charles,

You keep guessing things. Mugg & Bean definitely takes payment by card. I know this for a fact. PLEASE stop guessing tags

136319118 over 2 years ago

Hi Charles,

I think there are some tags you are using that you possibly don't fully understand the meaning of.

1. A building tagged with wheelchair access should be one where a wheelchair user can access the building easily by ramp or other means and access the upper floors easily via an elevator etc . It is important to get this tag correct for users of OSM data, don't guess it if you do not know. I would not consider fuel stations in Zambia to be wheel chair accessible.

2. The internet availability tag is useful for hotels and similar tourist amenities. It is handy for users of OSM data as the decision to book with a certain amenity may depend on the availability of internet and whether there is a fee for the usage of the internet, in this case internet_access=no is handy, it is not handy when tagging small retail outlets and shops as it is meaningless. You would not expect to find internet access at a fuel station in Zambia so tagging it internet=no is pointless,

3. Accepted payment options is handy for retail outlets and shops but not for churches and police stations, in fact police stations and other government institutions in Zambia do not accept payment in the form of cash or cards, this is to stop corruption. It is better to use payment:debit_card= yes or no and payment:credit_card= yes or no rather than specific brands of card and it is not helpful to guess. Nearly every retail outlet in Zambia will accept cash. I see you have tagged some restaurants as not accepting cards, I know for a fact that these restaurants do accept cards, if you do not know don't add the tag.

4. You are tagging government schools as religion=multifaith, while this is technically correct the tag is more for specifically religious places, see religion=multifaith?uselang=en-GB, the religion tag could be used for a school catering for a specific religion such as for people of the Muslim faith, in which case you would use the tag religion=muslim. Again it is not helpful to guess.

5. Many restaurants in Zambia would be considered to have an international cuisine menu, very few only offer only one type of cuisine apart from maybe KFC, John Dorry, Hungry Lion and a few others that offer chicken or fish.

While I have not used the Everydoor app I think it is really aimed at the user who can confirm the existence of pois and add missing details and corrections as they move around their locality and physically check the amenities etc. It is not intended as a mass editor for large diverse areas of a city, armchair mapping.

Providing accurate information will improve the map greatly, adding irrelevant or incorrect information does not help. The detailed mapping of building features such as roof types etc is best left to users who know architecture etc, ie fully know the difference between a skillion roof and a gabled roof. I have seen roofs tagged as flat that I personally know are not similarly with a skillion tag.

Please keep mapping but I would suggest that you stick to what you are familiar with and stay away from unnecessary tagging and guess work. If you visit a restaurant and you note features that are missing by all means update the map but whole scale incorrect updates don't add to the data.

There are not many active passionate mappers in Zambia, lets work together at making the map as accurate as we can.

Thanks

Please tell me how you would gain access to the building in a wheelchair let alone get to the upper floors.

136210126 over 2 years ago

Could I ask how often you have visited Central Police Station? It is definitely not wheelchair accessible. Please don't guess these sort of features. You are mapping as if you are actually visiting the places and there is no way you are

Hi Biker69,

Game Management Areas (GMA) are not nature reserves but, as the title implies, game management areas, controlled hunting is allowed in these areas by professional hunters with hunting clients with the required licenses. Hunting is allowed outside of these areas except in national parks and other protected areas by hunters other than professional hunters so long as they have the correct hunting licenses, these areas are known as open hunting areas . The protection title is Game management Area not the name of the game management. GMAs are intended as buffers around national parks and other protected areas.

Hi The Hunt,

The open areas along the rivers, such as Way: 1168005516 are seasonal wetlands, in Zambia and Zimbabwe known as 'dambos', but not sure what they are called outside of Zambia.

I doubt very much you have physically checked these buildings, even though you are adding a check date tag and some very detailed building level and roof type details, some roof type details I am sure are not correct. I am not aware of any 'drive through' pharmacies in Zambia, nor any 'drive through' ATMs, another tag you are using. I am aware of 3 drive through KFCs in Lusaka. I am not sure how you can tag places as being wheel chair accessible in Zambia without actually visiting the site. You also tag some restaurants as being 'vegan', I am not aware of any restaurants that offer vegan products in Zambia, but there may be some, but it would be a very niche market in Zambia and therefore be only very high end restaurants that offer vegan food, definitely not takeaways.

Please try and be as accurate as possible when tagging and avoid just guessing.

Thanks

Further to this please don't use the tag operator= Private. If you do not know who operates the business do not use the tag, the name of the business is enough.
