over 2 years ago | Hi charles chilufya, I notice when you are tagging with Every Door you are adding wlan access, are you sure there is wlan access for customers in all these places? Also knowing Lusaka and Zambia not many places are truly wheelchair accessible but you are tagging them as having wheel chair access. I just making you aware of this.
almost 3 years ago | HI Kedrick, Thanks for adding to the map of Lusaka. Please use the full name of the street names ie Mululu Street rather than Mululu St. The same with Road rather than Rd.
almost 3 years ago | Another thing to note is you should use 'Road' and 'Street' rather than 'Rd.' and 'St.'
almost 3 years ago | Hi siphiwe444, Thanks for adding to the map in the Lusaka area. Just one point, the lane count of the roads here are 2, one in each direction. A road with only 1 lane would be a road only wide enough to fit one vehicle. You are possibly thinking of carriageways i.e a dual carriageway may be in effect 2 separate roads of one lane each in either direction
almost 3 years ago | That is fine but it means you remove it for English users. As per the Wiki "Only provide, in normal circumstances, a link to a single Wikipedia article, which should be to the article in the primary (local) language for the subject. In some cases, links to articles in non-local languages can be appropriate." The official language in Zambia is English. Please see wikipedia=*?uselang=en-GB. particularly the section on secondary languages, users can use the language links within Wikipedia to read the article in another language.
almost 3 years ago | Hi wikilupe, Can you tell me why you are changing the Wikipedia tags from the existing English page link to the German one?
about 3 years ago | The Agricultural Showgrounds are more like a business park or industrial estate, possibly the equivalent to a fairground where an annual agricultural show takes place hence the use of the service road tag (highway=service)
about 3 years ago | way/98972057 is a roundabout I know this because I have driven around it
about 3 years ago | Please do not change these from service. They are service roads within the Agricultural Show Ground in Lusaka. I am tired of having to keep correcting remote mappers changes to these highways
about 3 years ago | Hi, It is not the amount of data being imported that is the problem but the quality of the data. When you say it is verified and cleared who has verified and cleared it? When I check some of the nodes you have imported I find either there is an existing building that has already been mapped at the point of your imported node so in this case you are duplicating the building. I other cases there is no building visible in the satellite imagery, I know that some of the imagery is out of date but in this case you can not be sure that the building no longer exists, as you know in rural areas of Zambia some buildings are not strongly built and are not permanent structures, 'kantembas' are often just made of grass. Also many rural shops open and close regularly, some mappers in Zambia are taking information from the Zambia Statistics agency (ZamStats) and uploading it without physically checking if the data is still valid. Much of this data contains misspellings and incorrect tags, building='Commercial_Building' is not a correct tag. 'Shop' is not a name of a shop but a description of its purpose, 'former hammer mill' is not a name but a description of the features previous use, what is it now? Also a more accurate tag for a shop would be building=retail. When you upload a number of point and features in one upload with out looking at the features in the imagery before hand that is a bulk import, rather check each feature by inspecting the imagery and if there is a building already mapped apply the name and any other information necessary to that building already mapped, if there is no building mapped but it exists in the imagery map it and apply any of the required information such as name and purpose of the building to the mapped feature. An other problem is there is a great deal of unnecessary address information being added, such as ward and constituency, this may change over time so will become outdated, even districts change or new ones are created by dividing old ones. The spirit of OpenStreetMap is to create a free map as accurate as possible, preferably mapped by local mappers who have local knowledge blindly uploading information to the map does not help as it degrades the data and reduces the effectiveness of the map. Africa is full of poor quality data, I am just trying to help ensure that the data in Zambia is as accurate as possible. May projects fill the map with bad information that then takes many hours to correct and remove, it is better to try add good information right from the start. I am assuming you are a local mapper, it would be better if you helped map and add detail to parts of the map you actually know and visit and check and correct errors in those places. Don't blindly follow Microsoft building footprints for example as they often mistake the giant billboards around Lusaka as buildings, when looking at this information again check and use you knowledge to correctly map what is in the image. If we all follow these guidelines we can, over time create an accurate and reliable map of Zambia that is of great help to other users who may not know much about Zambia and Africa as a whole, if the data is of poor quality they will not trust the map and ignore information that is accurate. Thanks for contributing to OSM.
| 125938275 | over 3 years ago | I have reverted this changeset, it was 2259 buildings as nodes, many buildings were already mapped. If you want to add the names and denominations of these churches check if the building has been mapped and then tag it in the following manner:
If it has not been mapped map it and then tag it as above. |
over 3 years ago | Hi, With a quick check on three of these I have found the buildings are already mapped. Please check before doing a bulk import like this as just importing data without checking degrades the quality of the data in OpenStreetMap. It is not good practice to do bulk imports. Unfortunately too many people are doing bulk imports in Zambia, taking information from the Zambia statistics agency, that are not improving the map at all, in fact it is creating a mess that has to be repaired by somebody else. I doubt very much your source is survey, which means you have physically visited all these places. Thank you

over 3 years ago | Hi Charles96, Please don't mass import data like this. There are a number of problems when this is done. 1. There is no check to see if the feature may have already been mapped 2. The names have mixed capitalization and there are numerous spelling errors. 'shop' is not a name it is a description of the building type. 'kantemba' on its own is not a name but also 'kantembas' are, by their nature, temporary so may no longer exist. 3. building=Commercial Building is not a recognized building tag, building=commercial is but many of these would be better tagged building=retail, all tags lowercase. Over all these imports degrade the quality of the data in OpenStreetMap. The idea is to improve the quality and hence the reliability of the data mapped so that people have confidence in the maps accuracy and use the data, if the data is poor people will not use the maps in a meaningful way as they don't trust it. The idea is not to add as much data as you can but to make sure the data already there and the data that is added is as accurate as possible. I am going to revert these changes. Thanks
over 3 years ago | Hi, Please do not do mass imports like this. Some places may already exist and mass imports go against the spirit of OSM
| 125316538 | over 3 years ago | Hi,
|
over 3 years ago | Hi, What are these? Please don't create mass imports of data like this, it is meaningless and degrades the quality of the data in OpenStreetMap. A number of mappers are doing mass imports of data from ZamStats that has no relevance to OpenStreetMap
over 3 years ago | Hi, Please don't upload large amounts of data like this without verifying the accuracy. There are many spelling errors, many of the names are in fact descriptions. There is no building type "Commercial Building" and many of the buildings have already been mapped so you are duplicating. Mechanical edits like this are frowned upon by the OSM community and may be reverted.
over 3 years ago | Hi, It is tobacco barns no buns and these are not names but descriptions
