I also would like to mention the official map from Palo Alto again:

The Oregon Expressway is not labeled with a bicycle lane.

Hi Heidi,

I would like to propose to label the road with cycleway=shoulder between Bryant and West Bayshore. I agree that bicycles are allowed to ride on the Expressway legally and that there is a shoulder painted on the road between Bryant and West Bayshore. However, I am not able to find either signs or marking painted on the road that it is a bicycle lane.

Hi cdruck,

Cycling might be permitted on the Oregon Expressway but it really is a bad idea, especially going under Alma Street. There is Oregon Avenue right next to the expressway and I suspect that is where the cycling route should be. There is a shoulder painted on some parts of the Oregon Expressway but for example none from Bryant to El Camino. The painted shoulder is nowhere marked as a bicycling lane. Also, the official Palo Alto map:

https://www.cityofpaloalto.org/civicax/filebank/documents/40419

Does not show it as a cycling route so I suggest not adding it back as a cycling route. One option could be to tag the places of the road with a shoulder as cycleway=shoulder.

I think you approached it very well. Asking before making a change is always appreciated. Welcome to OpenStreetMap!

There does not seem to be an official way for picking a name:

https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/30423/local-vs-official-name

My personal preference is to keep "name" the official city name, "La Salle", and "alt_name" or "loc_name" for "LaSalle". This would probably also be the least amount of work. However, if you feel strongly about tagging the names the other way around, be my guest :)

Adding an alias seems like a good idea. Do you think the "alt_name" tag would be suitable?
