Mapping Project in Ravensburg Germany

Posted by awolff on 2 October 2008 in English.

As part of this years project week at the Freie Waldorfschule Ravensburg
(www.waldorfschule-ravensburg.de) a group of 6 boys from year 10 and 11 mapped the in 7 two-hour sessions the Weststadt of the City of Ravensburg. The result can be inspected at: osm.org/?lat=47.7827&lon=9.58066&zoom=15&layers=0B00FTF

We worked on UBUNTU systems using gpsbabel to preprocess the GPS data. digikam was used to adjust the time of the pictures and to geocode them. JOSM was used to edit the map. Only open software was used to build the open map.

All of them have been OSM starters and in the end they all became experienced map makers. Ok at some stage a main road disappeared and 25Km of another main road was moved 1Km to the south. It was a pleasure to work with these young and enthusiastic boys.

I think this combination of physical exercise and reasonable work with the computer was an interesting experience for them as well.
