Hello
I don’t think there is necessarily a precedent for using the NaPTAN common name. This wiki page osm.wiki/NaPTAN/Surveying_and_Merging_NaPTAN_and_OSM_data says that “The tag name=* should be changed to show the name on the Bus Stop” and this has happened in some areas: Norfolk, Cheshire, southern Lancashire etc, it just hasn’t yet happened in Gloucestershire. I suspect why some other areas haven’t changed is that the name on the sign matches the NaPTAN common name.

I am not going to change any of the bus stop names you’ve edited back but I will continue to survey the names and add them to others.

Thank you for all the work you’ve been doing adding bus routes

Hello,
I do agree that the name on the sign is a bad name (too long, too specific, and often inconsistent), but I think this doesn't matter - it is the name on the sign so it should be the name on the map. Most people don't refer to bus stops by their name at all and would name the bus stop by its surroundings, in this case something like after the church.

There are also some bus stops where the name on the sign doesn't follow the trend eg this bus stop: node/8094343581 is called "Queen's Road" on the sign. This difference is lost and some people may think that it is the wrong bus stop when they're trying to find it. Just duplicating the naptan:CommonName doesn't really provide any extra information.

I think that "opposite Village Hall" is a suitable name and I'm leaning more towards it now.

Also the bus_display_name wouldn't work since it is intended for the name on the next stop display in the bus.

Thanks

Hello
I noticed that you have changed the name of some bus stops which I have previously edited, taking the name directly from the sign. I would say that the on the ground name should be preferred over the NaPTAN common name.
