Sorry, I was splitting it because ways should not be continuous where they are intersected by other ways, but I should have not worded it as being for routing. I was just under the understanding that some practices do cause issues with routing, but the changes weren't made specifically for any routing application. Please let me know if this is not an intended practice as the edits were not made specifically with inaccurate tags to improve routing as is stated on your linked article

Please refer to osm.wiki/Talk:Lane_assist/Examples/Motorway_exit for when to begin a motorway exit/slip lane. It should split before the legal separation(solid line), not when the lane begins
