Hi, not my way, looks like it was originally copied from USGS topographic maps, but I went back and fixed it up anyways, downgrading the Middle Branch Tobacco River to a stream in its upper reaches. its indeed there according to ESRI World Imagery, USGS 3DEP Elevation program - you can see the stream channel and culverts

No problem, I had been meaning to add the Keweenaw Heartlands Project of The Nature Conservancy and got a little carried away when I noticed a lot of unmapped logging roads and the like.

Yeah sorry, a little quick and dirty- barnstorming through Buena Vista Charter Township which seemed a little under-mapped per my interests- parks, schools, churches, sidewalks. I thought the soap box car racetrack in the park would be the edit that gathered attention! Usually I do add parking aisles, etc. but had a bit of a brainfart on that one just how the road would go- probably needs field verified- not local to me so maybe a seed for someone else to grow.

Exactly, that's what has drawn me to mapping abandoned logging railroads is the alure and novelty of finding the hidden past. Fun to armchair map then see if you can follow on the ground. LiDAR-derived terrain models are so highly precise that many features hidden from the casual observer otherwise can be evident. Railroads in particular- the compaction from 100,000's of lbs of rolling steel and the necessary dirtwork to make that feasible can leave quite a mark on the landscape and later road-builders capitalized on the existing routes to varying extents, which also is fun to see, potential take-offs from existing roads that could make for good exploratory adventures.

Hi c0nsumer, right- this was from when I first started out in OpenStreetMap. I have since stopped adding abandoned railways to OSM except when its main-line that might make for a good rail-trail sometime. I have transitioned such mapping to OHM, so if you consider this non-relevant to OSM, please feel free to delete with no hard feelings on my part. Logging railroads pre-dated roads for log trucks (1920's on) and have characteristic engineered curves with a set radii- logging roads are more helter-skelter. I use USGS 3DEP to identify them. Often when overlaid by modern roads I now think the tagging and mapping of abandoned railroads just isn't relevant to OSM especially with the advent of OHM.

Fixed it, yes it should be an outer role:

Haha, yes such a pain. I am a fan of super relations for that reason- might see about breaking up the Ottawa NF into its component ranger districts just for that reason, easier to find errors. FYI, while Wisconsin many county forests, Mich. only has a few with Gogebic Co. being the largest. School forests too- lots to map. I guide others to those places I myself cannot go.

Thanks, I fixed it- Changeset:

Now any ideas on what's wrong with the Ottawa National Forest relation?

Whoops! Thanks, its fixed now.

No clue what happened to Omena Beach park; maybe did a mis-click. I re-added the leisure=park tag. Been working through the Leelanau county recreation plan and checking on all the parks listed so thats probably what happened- I searched for Omena and then made some misclick or another

Thanks, someone else added that but good to know for the future.

125406659 over 3 years ago

Deleted it, thanks. Somehow all the ways for the Big Blue Lake relation were duplicated with a changeset ID editor hiccup.

125405939 over 3 years ago

Sorry about that, iD editor had a hiccup when saving changes, that must have caused it, resolved the duplications in changeset www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/125534298

Oops, got confused with bridges. Usually do waterways in ID editor, should have used the JOSM presets

Check the terrain data from Lidar- the track ballast and cuts may still be evident, allowing one to see the grade on the ground by dedicated survey: https://apps.nationalmap.gov/3depdem/ overgrown with trees may obscure it from leaf-off aerial imagery, but doesn't mean its not there. Might as well delete a bunch of tree-overhung streams and roads if using that logic.

Thanks, sorry I had not gotten to it.

Hi Brian, the ways in the "Benzie County State Forest" do not appear to currently be Michigan DNR properties (source: https://gis-midnr.opendata.arcgis.com/). "Benzie County State Forest" is not a recognized state forest- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Michigan_state_forests -

I am curious as to your source for this data so we can improve the map- "PAD-US", USGS Topos? Those sources in my experience can be a bit out of date.

Okay you got me. My bad- I forgot to strip the tags off that way when I imported the missing ways from the USFS open data portal. Now cleaned up. Change set 119171751.

This relation for the Manistee National Forest is too big and will need the super-relation treatment. (osm.wiki/Relation - max size should be 300). Probably will get broken down into ranger districts - Baldwin/White Cloud and Cadillac/Manistee. And that may not be enough, see the US Forest Service Data import page, proposed hierarchy tree I wrote up today: osm.wiki/US_Forest_Service_Data the HMMF probably needs broken up to at least the management area level, to get to the 300 way size and accurately reflect the varying protection_class levels, and allow mapping of the wilderness, research natural areas, and the like.

That way looks like one of the junky ways I deleted in this following changeset earlier today: changeset/119158330#map=6/43.592/-85.975

I searched “Manistee National Forest” to double check the relation and three ways popped tagged with natural=woods and name=Manistee National Forest. They duplicated the existing ways in the relation, so as a good OSM citizen I deleted them and moved on with life. Today was supposed to be another day of restoring the Michigan State Forest data, but that got sidetracked into a deep dive into super relations for boundaries, subarea relations and admin_centre nodes. see my work on the Au Sable State Forest super-relation: any feedback is appreciated.

Abandoned railways were identified using the USGS 3DEP 1m resolution multidirectional hillshade image service from https://elevation.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/rest/services/3DEPElevation/ImageServer

Abandoned railways are also commonly evident from on the ground investigations and from high resolution aerial imagery such as the State of Michigan statewide leaf-off imagery. These abandoned railways are commonly used for rail trails- hiking, biking or motorized access such as ATV, motorcycle, and snowmobile. Including non-repurposed abandoned rail on OSM is a common practice and assists outdoor recreation planning and off-trail navigation. Segments may be appropriate for future recreational trail connections between communities, or other existing rec facilities in order to expand the recreational opportunities within rural areas, or provide pedestrian/bicycle access within urban/suburban areas separate from roadways- see https://www.railstotrails.org/
