| All class AA roads mapped in Sri Lanka OSM map | Dear Thilina, I have reviewed your recent feedback in the community and would like to provide some clarification regarding the road classification and route numbering. You have marked the Kamburupitiya–Kirinda road as B53, which appears to be based on the historical B-Class road numbering system implemented in 1956 by the Ceylon Public Works Department (PWD). However, following the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and the establishment of Provincial Councils, the Road Development Authority (RDA) assumed responsibility for National Highways. Subsequently, a revised classification and numbering system was officially gazetted starting from 1988. According to this updated system, the correct route number for this road is B536, not B53. Furthermore, please note the current classification system for roads managed by the RDA, which are recognized as Gazetted National Highways in Sri Lanka: A-Class Roads (A0–A35) – Trunk Roads AB-Class Roads (AB1–AB45) – Primary Roads AC-Class Roads (AC1–AC32) – Primary Roads B-Class Roads (B1–B654) – Primary Roads In addition, roads under Provincial Road Development Authorities (PRDA), classified as C-Class and D-Class, are considered Secondary Roads. Meanwhile, roads managed by Pradeshiya Sabhas, categorized as E-Class, are classified as Tertiary Roads. I trust this clarifies the matter and helps ensure consistency with the officially gazetted classifications. Thanks Eng. Jayah - Chief Engineer |
