Looking around it appears around halve the named lanes are service roads the other half are defined as alleys.

From perhaps a purely selfish point of view if both definitions could be usable 'service road' would be a better option as it links in with with apps such as wandrer.earth enthusing people to walk new 'roads.

My thoughts were that alleyways were unnamed roads whereas a service road would be named and generally with road markings and/or signage as such is the case with this one.

Looking into the market you are right permission should be classed as permissive.
I honestly didn't think they opened the grounds up for free entry as whenever i have been passed there has always been a event on or just closed up.
