downloading Garmin Map Tiles

Posted by Rogerdodger on 27 August 2010 in English.

Ok this is probably not relevant here, but Ive run out of options and you guys are always awesome at answering. I have a Garmin 60scx Ive been downloading map tiles from Lamburtus at http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php I've mapped a lot of new stuff in my area, so wanted to update my maps in both Mapsource and my garmin, so downloaded the current map from lamburtus. His map shows a up to date OSM map but the tile I'm downloading seems to be an old version with non of my data on.

I don't know if I have to write html to make these pictures appear, but here are two screen shots, one shows what is currently in the tile from Lamburtus and the other is what I get on Mapsource after downloading the tile.

Anyone know what could be going on? I thought perhaps I was doing something wrong and not uploading the new tiles to both my Garmin and Mapsource, but Ive deleted the old maps out and so Im sure Im only loading this new tile.

using relations in JOSM

Posted by Rogerdodger on 20 August 2010 in English.

I'm trying to figure out how to map a riverbank. Ive read the wiki and it's not clear on a step by step process and doesnt work for me. I drew the river, I drew the river bank as a closed object. I tagged them accordingly, but I dont understand what "relation" is supposed to even do! If I highlight the riverbank, then click presets, relations, multipolygon, the pop up window says selection unsuitable. What the hell is a relation!? Should I be using it in this way and how do I use it. Plan non geek speak appreciated.

I'm still trying to understand how to place nodes/waypoints in rural areas with no help other than coordinates. Ive now figured out how to get the coordinates from a node in mapsource,(Mapsource is the program that came with my Garmin for uploading and manipulating the data.) but when I enter those in JOSM they are way off. For example my waypoint in Mapsource is at N32 15.888 E77 11.271 I enter that in JOSM and I'm miles away. If I manually place the node in JOSM at the approximate position it tells me I'm at 32.26343 77.18796 No where near the Mapsource coordinates. Any explanations or help? ow is this something to do with the decimal point?

I'm still trying to understand how to place small villages and small clusters of buildings in very remote areas of northern India. The satellite detail in yahoo isnt good enough to accurately place them. I have GPS waypoints of them, but taking those coordinates doesn't seem to help me in OSM since it doesn't have coordinates to reference..or does it? Any help. Please dont reply with "oh its easy just read the wiki" ive done that and I cant find anything to help. I need info in very easy to understand language not computer speak.

thanks

Anyone with experience mapping here and able to explain things in a idiots guide sorta way, want to keep an eye on edits I make and be available for me to ask questions of? I know I can ask here, but thought rather than clutter up the board with dumb questions, it might be better if I had access to someone personally.

Thanks
Rog

Sorry more questions! This time in regards my Garmin 60csx. I now find that I can't download the tracks from my GPS to my computer without it removing the time stamps, which then means the track when uploaded to OSM is rejected. So is the only way to clean up the track through the GPS? thats going to make things a bit laborious. It also means everything Ive done is useless too since Ive already downloaded the tracks and been cleaning them up on the computer..grr

Ive made a few tracks over a stretch of road that is badly mapped and missing on OSM. Is it better to load them one at a time or put them all in the same file and load them all?

Dont have the skills yet to edit them, plus a horribly slow dial up connection, although I will clean them up before I upload them.

New here, but hope to contribute soon. Im currently traveling in northern India. I downloaded the India tiles from here http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php which seems to be somehow affiliated with OpenStreetMaps? but Ive noticed the detail on OpenStreetMaps is much more detailed. In particular the city of Leh is entirely missing from the link site. Is this something to do with one needing to catch up with the other? or am I missing some other fact?
