over 5 years ago | Hi Dave, sorry didn't see this. I've had a another look at this and looks like houses on that stretch of road are known as XX Sells Green. Further east in fact a similar thin occurs at Martinslade and there is in fact a street name sign there too. So have now changed both of those roads. You may be aware of this, but NSG I've been accessing via One.Network. You have to get a free account, but then in the layers menu, under Operational Info you can pick NSG and then click on any road with an entry/layer. It names Sells Greens but doesn't use Martinslade, so I think the NSG is wrong with the latter by the looks of it. I think the local authority manages the NSG in their area, so maybe Wiltshiere Council need to investigate it. I've changed these two roads for now as it seems to be what they are known as.
over 6 years ago | Ah, just hadn't notice the 'chunky' bit before so thought it was part of the edit (I don't find it easy to retrace who has done previous edits, because it often seems to include edit sets that cover half of the globe!) With regards this generally, I guess my thinking was with it being 2 months it should be OK to leave as it is, as with other roadworks, but can understand that as it wasn't clear when the reopen date was it probably looked like it was going to be closed for a long time. Hopefully it's OK to allow access now, in anticipation of them going back in in a week or so, as this will mean sites like TravelineSW are able to use the layout to track the buses to? It'll probably be worth a trip up there in early September as the 'square' will be a slightly different shape from what I understand and so will need amending. If you do decide to remap it in September, then bit cheeky but if you could reply to this message at the time to let me know, I will ensure the bus stops are moved in NaPTAN and that the bus service tracking is OK. No worries if not. I may try to do it myself if I get the time, although I've only got a plan and there's a possibility it'll be different on the ground in the end I guess. Either way, cheers Dave.
over 6 years ago | Also, with the chunkier roads you have put in, is that something that could techinically be done on every road? It does give a better impression of how wide the road is. Dorchester Street is a good example of a very wide road that looks very narrow on OSM (Great Pulteney St too). Preusmably you still need to have the general highway line, and this is essentially an additional polygon which has no bearing on, for example, journey planners etc.
over 6 years ago | Hi Dave, from previous contact with the contractors, my understanding is that the area was closed to commence works on Friday 28th June and will be finished on Friday 30th August. The overall layout will broadly be the same, although the loop will be slightly wider and squarer. What is the precedent for this generally, in terms of road closures? Presumably if we're talking about a 2 month job you generally wouldn't edit OSM, but if it was say 4 months plus then you would amend? e.g. North Road in Combe Down is currently closed for 6 weeks but I guess we wouldn't close it on OSM? Cheers Dave.
over 6 years ago | Hi Dave, Ah by the looks of it that's the National Traveline, which yes isn't great. It's www.travelinesw.com that I'm referring to. With regards the eastbound stops, there are actually three bus stops at the point on Dorcheter Street, and three westbound stops (only two shown on OSM). Further down to the rail station there should be one eastbound and one westbound, but in OSM there's no eastbound stop and three westbound. The easiest thing would be to have an import from NaPTAN, but that doesn't seem to happen. Not sure whether it's possible with OSM? I've noticed that there is bus route data with OSM, but much of it is incredibly out of date (some routes were withdrawn at least 6-7 years ago), so may be worth removing unless someone is committed to keeping on top of? With regards bays, I've noticed Bristol Bus Station has each individual bay drawn in. That's possibly the best solution on that front. Generally speaking First allocate all services to individual bays, although yes from time to time they will have to use a different bay, but for all other purposes (Traveline, Real Time Information, roadside timetables, First's driver running cards, etc. etc.) specific bays are allcoated (Bays 1 & 2 are used by National Express and Bay 3 used by some of the less regular non-First services). It may be SouthGate could provide a map of their car park to be matched to, and then the road could just be named SouhGate Car Park. As I understand it, within TravelineSW a road name is allocated. The system then checks for the nearest road, and if that matches the road name given, or the OSM road has no name, then it will track. If the OSM name is different then it will find another road slightly further away. My point about the location of roads, etc. is that I can pin point a bus stop location for NaPTAN purposes using eastings and northings (so to the nearest metre), however that ends up putting the bus stops in Debenhams or in Brunel Square for example, which implies that those two locations may be drawn incorrectly? Tricky one really, as I think even if someone was to calculate the corners of Brunel Square with easting and northing, is there any way to enter this into OSM? Thanks Dave
over 6 years ago | I think there are two main issues. Firstly, it is not clear that the OSM data is completely accurate, e.g. is the line of Dorchester Street on OSM definitely the centre line of the road in real life? Secondly, there is no way in OSM to indicate road width, and Dorchester Street is very wide from one kerb to the other. As a result, when trying to track the eastbound bus stops on Dorchester Street to Dorchester Street it instead tracks to the nearest road, which is the SouthGate car park. With that specific example, I'm not convinced that the car park road as drawn accurately matches real life. Therefore, the simplest thing seemed to be to move the car park road further north. It may be possible to the name the car park road, which would also prevent the stops tracking to it. Either way, until the car park is accurately drawn, it seems fine to amend it slightly. With the bus station, ideally it may be that the road could be drawn to accurately match the yellow lines at the back of the bus station, and then to draw 16 mini-roads up to the points where each bay finishes next to each bus station door. In the meantime, it seemed best to draw the road closer to the bay doors, to allow the stops to track to that road. You'll see I've added in footpaths going into the bus station, which again aids with the journey planner, since it wasn't clear that pedestrians could walk into the bus station building. There was also no link from north-west corner of Brunel Square to the bus station, and one of the crossings was missing, so I have added those in too.
over 10 years ago | Monday at work (I'm working at Council nowadays) I should be able to move the bus stops officially on the system. I don't know how often OSM syncs with the national database, but I see their positions are determined by Naptan which is what I should be editing.
over 10 years ago | Ha I should have left it! Thought I'd give it a crack in case no one else did. Feel free to put more detail into it. Can you move where one live intersectes another. For example Prior Park Road intersects the roundabout where the path down the side of the Church, but I'd like to separate these nodes and can't see how to do it - I end up deleting the whole of one of the lines...!
almost 11 years ago | The first part was drawing a path, which is correct. The second part I tried to label the green area as a highway as well as a park, because if you ask for walking directions it won't let you walk through the park. Is there a way round this? Or do you just have to make up a bridle way which would be the natural line of travel through the park? Thanks
almost 11 years ago | Yes please. Is there no way to revert myself?
almost 11 years ago | How do I undo this?
