Thanks for those examples. That's why I didn't just change it. My main issue is I feel the expressway tag gives the impression the road is of a much higher standard than reality, especially when it comes up on a navigation app. I'll work out how to raise this topic - I haven't done that before. I know of a number of other places in Victoria where they have done exactly the same treatment - whack a safety barrier down the middle of the road.
BTW I like the windy road to Eden; great for the motorbike!

Thanks for replying. I did refer to the documentation, particularly the "how to decide" paragraph with a decision matrix. For this road, none of the intersections are controlled (access_control=no), therefore according to the matrix, expressway=no.

I feel you have not travelled on this road, otherwise you would know why I was surprised to see the expressway tag. On this awful stretch of road, with no room for error, the traffic actually tends to slow down, rather than speed up. I was alerted when I saw it come up on a 3rd party navigation map as a motorway. Generally roads should be mapped according to their actual nature. It may have been more useful to map the central barrier, which randomly stops and starts, plus the handful of passing lanes (as 2 lanes vs 1 lane) along this section of road. (BTW, the alt_name "Main Street" is not correct, that only applies within the boundaries of Bairnsdale, but that was not yours)

Regarding the Australian use of "expressway", please note that this is not just colloquial confusion, but it is simply not one of the standard tags used. Probably best not to introduce a non-standard tag. Please refer to Australian Tagging Guidelines/Roads osm.wiki/Australian_Tagging_Guidelines/Roads#Route_and_Highway_Relations

Hi Tāmaki (is that correct?), I wanted to point out that this section of the Princes Highway does not in any way meet the requirements for an "Expressway", particularly as the intersections are not controlled in the required manner. It is just a normal highway, with a centre safety barrier, causing it be divided into a single one-way lane on each side. Its actually a terrible piece of road, so I was surprised to see it mapped as an expressway. Also, "expressway" is not a tag commonly used in Australia. If you would like to revert this change that would be good, thanks.

This way meets all the physical criteria to be a cycle way - 2+ m wide, routed away from houses, part of a looping circuit through a park, etc - except for a sign. And Casey council is very poor in this respect, as you know; I don't expect they will ever get around to it. I think you would be doing a disservice to everyone if you were to tag it bicycles=no, as that would not respect the reality.
So my answer is no. Please don't.

This section of Belgrave Hallam Road is a bit unusual as it is mostly bicycle lanes, but towards the Northern end they become raised concrete tracks adjacent to the roadway (then run out completely). I hopefully captured that nuance correctly in the different sections. There is also a separate pedestrian path on the western side. I felt putting the bike "track" as a seperate line then the pedestrian path would make it a bit too complicated.
