Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. Adding surface tags is on my list of things to work on.
In rural areas of the US there are many unpaved roads that do have relatively high traffic volumes and/or are direct routes between small populated places. I generally focus on routing for motorized vehicles but understand OSM is used for bicycles as well. I will try to keep the needs of cyclists in mind as well.

According to official Iowa DOT maps, Lincoln Way is unsigned IA 930 in Boone County at least. They also classify Lincoln Way as a principal arterial from the US 30 interchange to Duff Avenue.

I think I got them all but a second look is always welcome.
