Hi, sorry, just getting back to look at this. As a retired IT professional using two different tags ('place' or 'suburb') for the same piece of data ('Casterton') just seems totally wrong, especially for houses that might be 50m apart in the same village. It also disagrees with what the wiki says. I think I will file a feature enhancement request on Github for StreetComplete as that's where the problem is.

Just converted two addresses to name/suburb/city/postcode and StreetComplete now asks for street or place names. Doh. Personally I think that's a StreetComplete bug not fully understanding UK village address formats. I'd prefer to stick to the recommendation on OSM wiki which matches the Royal Mail format. If you agree I will carry on (but not today!)

Thanks. I was just saying what the official Royal Mail format should be (which does include post-town=Carnforth unfortunately). Amazon and others use 'Kirkby Lonsdale' which is a lot more sensible, but it's not the official address.

I don't need the Royal Mail data as I live here so know every house, and the village has its own list of all the addresses with postcodes compiled independently. It's not actually too complicated as there are only about 165 houses and very few street names so once you have a few friends scattered about the place it's easy to see where all the postcodes are. If you think someone may complain and assume I have 'stolen' them from the Royal Mail please let me know and I will just leave that blank.

there's certainly confusion, but that seems to be the case for just about any online system and addresses in Casterton! Indeed I have occasionally been unable to register my address on some websites as they refuse to accept the official format!
All addresses in Casterton, as looked up on the official Royal Mail database, are like this:
<house name> if used
<street number and name> if used
Casterton
Carnforth
Postcode

My intention ultimately is to update OSM with that data for every house in Casterton because it's a total pain for many delivery people and others to find anywhere!

Based on the wiki it looks like I need:
addr:housename (if used)
addr:housenumber (if used)
addr:street (if used)
addr:suberb
addr:city
addr:postcode

Thanks for pointing me to that wiki page as the ID editor was offering 'addr:place' which I see is incorrect for the UK.

I will attempt to update all the Casterton addresses to that format over the next few days - as long as my edits are not going to get undone by you or someone else!
